What is chord progression?

chord progression is a series of PRE-determined chord that progress from one to another.

example:

I will survive have a chord progression of

Am Dm G C F Bm E

that's a chord progression .....

it doesn't need to have a melody or rhythm for it to be a chord progression. as the term implies, it just a progression of chords.

the chords can be determined by you as composer, or it's already there from the song that u're playing.

In jazz, they will improvise over certain Pre-determined chord progression as well.

So doesn't every song has a chord progression?

So, what so special about chord progression...

Lets say that i'm always play acoustic with E > G > D...doesn't that consider as chord progression?

if your music repeats over those few chords, that is that particular chord progression for that particular verse, chorus or bridge.

And these chord progressions are common found on other songs as well.. you cant run away from that nor can you actually create a new chord progression unless its like you born some few thousand years ago.. haha..

take chinese songs for example, we all know that 80% or more of those songs are based on the canon's progression!

So basically if i'm not wrong, its jus a word to use to describe a part of the music.. like or you might wanna call it chord cycle? chord pattern? see?

dun worry so much about this phrase man!

frodonet, chord progression is simply a term which means a series of chords.

there's nothing special about it.

chord progression is also known as cadences in music theory.

bin4christ, y not

Em7, GMaj7, DMaj7 ? use some Cm7b5 occasionally :D

ok we are making him confuse!!!

you know how certain chords sound good when played one after another? its just like how certain notes sound good when played together. this is not by chance. when you are playing a series of notes, like when solo-ing or whatever, these notes sometimes follow a pre-determined pattern or order. these notes are called a SCALE. from these notes, we can build chords. so from a scale, we can build a CHORD PROGRESSION.

correct me if i'm wrong, i learn my theory from the bedroom rather than the classroom 8)

anyway all you have to do is google the phrase "chord progression" to get whatever you need. one of the sites i came across:

i recently bought a basic book.

Inside got show that scales can be changed to chords also...

haven't played with that yet.

So, it's not by chance that notes sounds nice with other notes...interesting point...

Maybe the question's alreday bin answered but anyway,

a chord progressions just a formulaic set a chords that are supposed t sound good.

I - VI - V is a chords progression and can b applied to different keys.

In key of A for example:

Chord progression I VI V will denote A D and E (standard blues chords)
Of course to make it bluesier play the 7th 9th or 13th chords if u want to.

Yup so there are many other stuff liddat like II-V-I progressions and stuff.

Generally its supposed t help u spot a chord progression automatical by just for example figuring out the first chord. Then all u have t do is try out diff progresssions till 1 fits. Also helps when jammin' when some dudes just like hey lets jam over a 145 blues in A, then u cud automatically know what chords are those.

And of course if u were t write songs and wanna get certain moods into ur songs.

Yup
Hope that helps.
