What is a totally original Singaporean sound?

the difference between local bands and other bands is the theme of the lyrics. local bands tend to choose certain kind of themes when they write songs.

but that was last time lah. now got alot of kids doing it for kicks, to be scene, to look cool, to seek approval from masses of people. the music also sometimes doesn't have any meaning or soul. or sometimes it is so extremely indie or alternative that it cannot be compared to anything, and hence cannot possibly be considered 'bad'

Big Ups to those that say music is borrowed.. and adapted.. Look at J-Pop, Taiwanese / Hongkong musics.. Their music has developed over the years, borrowed from other culture and influences and adapted to the local audience. And if you look at the music history.. different genres have all come from some other music and have over time been moulded and adapted to the culture it's in..

Hence maybe the Singapore sound is whatever Singaporeans enjoy and relate to? whether the more original stuff or the so called "bad" cover bands..

p.s. if we're a melting pot.. then maybe we won't have just one sound but many! Kiasu mah! :p

To put it simply, a truly Singaporean sound/band would mean something extra to Singaporeans than to non-Singaporeans.

For example, while Australians went crazy over The Suns, they would not have gotten all the references as much as Singaporeans. I'm not saying you have to make references to local culture, but it counts.

@fgl: No way? that was you?

@rotterramone: is there any way i can get the kopi kat klan off you? i seriously miss them.. all their skits are friggin' funny

singapore is a rojak country to begin with. so many diverse cultures mixed in a bowl til it becomes... cultureless.
and why bother abt the singapore sound? just make good music.

rojak ain't really a bad thing...
cosmopolitan country we are.

But I find things about beng/lian and minah/mut or whatnots very amusing.
Maybe we can sing about 'yusheng' since only singaporeans do this.

*yusheng = that platter of shreded carrots n cucumber with raw fish we toss on Chinese New Year.

Gosh...at first i thought it was ingenious.
After that...the whole SARS holidays, it totally killed me b4 sars could reach me.
