make up your mind fella... :D

i have the same feelings towards the pacificas.

damn well made... but i don't like the feel... specifically the neck...

the fretboard edges of yamaha always seems uncomfortable. I have a few yamaha before.

relating to your budget per se- it's a little restrictive but we respect your choices...

i would have suggested an SG if it's not for the budget factor. to me the SG covers metal & blues adequately PROVIDED it's supplemented with the appropriate amp/ pickups.

YAMAHA PACIFICA.

i think they have PRO contruction. Excellent quality. The drawback are the damn tuners and the electronics. WEAK mannn. Bend strings, out of tune instantly!!

I say go for a midrange Pacifica. Then upgrade tuners and pickups. Believe it or not, you now have a monster guitar. They are great after afew enhancements. :D

yes..yamaha pacificas are good..

its underrated la..

people go.."huh??yamaha??haiya..they are better at making motorbikes la"

haha maybe but i doubt so(well tats mi opinion).i got a pacifica and boy did it giv mi alot of probs. of coz once u get it fixed up it is an okay guitar.the higher end pacificas are good. but quality wise betw an ibanez the ibanez has better quality.unless ur comparin it with a gio, well tats a different story.

Hmm.

Well... a good place to start is the Gibson and Epiphone home page, followed by the various online forums, but please take those foreign reviews with a pinch of salt... exaggeration is a fault with some folks.

Common misnomer: "built like a tank!!!"

Anyways, LPs come in so many variations.. but most of them revolve around the standard set-neck, twin-humbucker, tune-o-matic (or variant-thereof) bridge and 3-a-side headstock model which we all love.

I would also second Subversion's vote for the SG not just because I own a G-400 myself) but bearing in mind how many of rock's finest have utilised it to great effect: Frank Zappa, Angus Young, Pete Townshend, Jimi Hendrix (for only a while though).

The down-side of LPs is that they're in general very heavy (with the exception of one Gibson '59 Lp reissue that I tasted so long ago), and that's where the SG surpasses the LP. You wouldn't want to break your back eh?

Like I mentioned before.. go around and try them out. However, like those who mentioned previosuly.. the Yamahas ain't too bad either. I personally have my eye on that new white model sitting pretty in Music Plaza's window.

hope this helps.

i seciond the heavy part. You'll be lucky to find a Gibson LP thats less than 4kgs. Unless your talking the cloud 9 series with the sound chambers

Hmm.

I once tried a plywood LP and it was heavy as well :x

But I daresay that the guitar plays only so much in giving you the tone you want, what REALLY matters imo is your fingers, and your feel.

If you can't feel the blues or know how to rip it up / chugga chugga for metal... how can right?

i guess i would always suggest getting a Strat  ... it is really a very versatile guitar..

Blues and Metal... no problems~ 8)

However with your budget, i guess settling on a Yamaha Pacifica is a good choice too. The neck actually feels quite comfy to me as well.

I, too, suggest u check out the weight of the Les Paul types first before deciding... haha... you may not feel comfortable with the weight..

I actually own a Yamaha AES620 and I loved it to bits. But the pacifica neck and fingerboard feels a bit weird and the pickups are kinda weak to me. But their AES series is the best!! But pretty underated, most people will buy an epi if they are lookin for a lp type of guitar. But I highly recomend an AES if you are lookin for a lp type and have 1k+ to spare.

Hmm.

The AES series have received pretty good reviews and I must say I was pretty tempted if not for the fact that it looks kind of chunky to me.

but whenever I go to music plaza I always look at the G&L guitars. Pricey, but worth the dough.. but the headstock does deter some people.

^ The AES is very chunky esp the neck, in fact the whole guitar  and is a pain on the shoulders BUT I love it so much that I jus don care abt its chunkieness. :D F##K the painful shoulders ..hahahah

eh the weight of the guitar is the least important factor..

If you find it heavy. how are you gonna carry the m16, the saw, the matador or the GPMG when you enter the army? In fact, you'll have to carry them for longer durations during your route marches, and of course the SOC :)

Hmm.

^^ Very true, but I have to say that I would not want to accelerate the hunching of my shoulders when aging hits home. Even when I noodle about at home standing up, after 1.5 hours or so I'd sit down for about another 30 min before getting up again.

Health is important man! But training up is also the way to go of course.

^ Dey diff lah...M16 is kenna forced to carry one. U will curse and swear when u carry them but the guitar, no matter how heavy it is , it is still my precious..wont ever curse and swear  I love u My AES620!!

Yamaha Pacifica's middle+bridge pickup combi provides a fabulous sound for the blues, plenty of punch and quack.
