Website for local Female Musicians?

Hola guys,

This is in response to the 'Rock Chicks look here' thread. Someone mentioned something about setting up a directory for female musicians as an alternative to just having their pictures posted up, so I thought I'd give that a try.

Now first of all, before posts about 'why females, the guys can play all the same' and stuff related to that sprout up, this isn't the typical 'grrrl power! we're more powderful than the guys!' shiet. If there's anyone who's really adamant about keeping to that opinion, hey by all means please do it like they did for the pictures thread - go set up a directory dedicated to male musicians or something. It'd do many good for local music anyway. Can be brother-sister site some more. ;)

But I digress. The main objective of setting a site/directory dedicated to female musicians is not to compare them to males - rather, it's to help them gain recognition in the local music scene. Recognition as in two parts: first, to show how capable our local female musicians can be, and secondly for people to 'discover' the ones they never really knew about - this, hopefully, will help make things easier for people who're looking for female musicians to work with (think 'where are all the female drummers/guitarists etcetc' threads).

So. How's this prospective site going to work? This is where this thread comes in. Suggestions, ideas, anything that you think would make it more effective/interactive/godknowswhatelse? Post them here! I've to admit though - I'm not that much of a html expert or anything, so nothing too cheem okay. Interviews, a list of females musicians with descriptions and links to their audio sites and stuff are basically what I have in mind now.

So post away! (please?)

I don't get it?? Why do people like to talk sexism in everything??? Even in music they differentiate between a woman and a man. You must a female musician website, then next a male musician website... HELLO!!! DOES SONG'S REALLY BOTHER YOUR SEX SO MUCH???
Come on!! Look at whats played on the radio, look at what's on tv... Both male and female get an equivalent competitive chance to be in the music scene.. Music is about passion, it ain't a job about muscles!! Any sex can fall in love with music, any sex can play any instrument!!! Why the differentiation???
Females are bothered so much about guys drooling over the fact that they have to dress sexy or look pretty. Don't blame the guys for that, blame the fashion industry.. And come on, nowadays males also have to look good on tv as well, it's a vice versa issue.
COME ON, LET'S PLAY MUSIC HERE!!

fored,

on another thought after reading your post and others.. i think a new local website or forum would be nice. Some forums are just getting way boring.. though the term established is use on the forum but it isnt something as interactive as before.. many would realise that..

well as for a female website for band, if it is a must to feature the local female musician(like you yourself) i guess you can make a website that actually have both male n female counterpart.Use links to view different gallery or such like you would choose toilets.. Going toilet is definately the same for both male and female,we all go and need and will go.. but we wun go to the same loo~ haha

Gr3y

there are good female musicians locally, except that I think it's the emptiest vessels (dollydressup-n-pose-with-insert-music-instrument-here-n-post-a-pix) making the loudest noise. so the ones who really kickass, just quietly do what they do best without expecting recognition for their ability.

i have to agree with both gr3y and parablue at the same time standing from my neutral (I try to) point of view.
because from what I see, there'll be female musicians standing on parablue's side (until they need to go to the washroom) if not they'll be on gr3y's side. and you're gonna be limiting yourself to 50% of the male/female/trans gender population and 50% again of that 50% to female musicians who agree with on your side.

end of the day I'm not sure if this is worth your time. you might as well use that time for your own musicianship or do something that helps the local scene.

10¢ worth.

relax man

Hmm okay. You guys have a point, but I guess it's all subjective. As far as I know there are already sites which are directories for local bands - think the localmusichere directory as well as http://purerock.org/ . Why create another one just for the sake of it? Why not something different?

Hell, I'd gladly set up an elaborate site without having to narrow down the scope, maybe somewhere along the lines of purevolume/myspace for the local scene, but right now I just don't have the means (money, skills) and time (exams, exams) to manage it. Maybe next time, yes. But not now. And actually I do know of someone who may be setting one up - that would be something to look forward to.

This is more of a branch out from the main objective of helping local music out here - like how music has also been categorized into specific genres, and then further 'promoted' from there. You don't see people flaming metal sites saying 'why just metal? isn't it all music?', or other sites as well for that matter. And before the 'male or female also sound the same' argument comes in again, I mean this in a general way.

There've been efforts made for female musicians locally, like http://ladyfest.sg/ or the FBAS. It's not just based on bringing attention to female musicians - rather, it's also sort of a community. Where people who're looking for female musicians can know where to look, or where female musicians seeking other female musicians to talk to, on top of their male friends. We see threads asking which bands have female musicians, or stuff along that line. Well, how about a one-stop place to find out?

Come on guys, take this in a more lighthearted manner. I have as much respect for the guys out there as the girls.

It's a side-project, it's a small effort. It's not a revolution.

Hey fored, I really think you should just go ahead with it. As you said, it's a side project and not a revolution. And I don't see the fuss of it all to have or not to have such a site. If it works, it will go on. If not, then it's still something fun you have done. I can't see any negative points - only positive.

If people can spend hours and hours doing things like blogs (which I've no idea the purpose of it...), I don't see how why not start a website you mentioned. And your website probably has 100x more purpose than a blog!

Just go ahead with it.

Cheez: Thanks for the support!

blueprint: Hmm I would, but it's more of a different avenue: if I remember right ladyfest concentrates on gigs and events featuring female musicians. I'm planning on doing this on a website basis. BUT a collaboration with them is definitely not ruled out. Yep :)

And well, I know there really isn't a need to explain myself and what I'm trying to do here, but I guess support from the people here would be a big help in itself.

relax man

Sorry!! Maybe i sound pretty harsh! But i'm not a female, but have been in several bands where i team up with female drummers, bassist or singers. And hell yeah, i luv to be in a band where i'm the only guy! But really, i don't see the fuss about why people get so sensitive about gender in the music industry..
We see gender discrimination happening in workplaces like manufacturing plants, engineering etc etc. What i would say is the music industry have been very much equivalent, unless you are talking about the 50s.
Standard and skill wise is really personal, there are people with talent and those who don't. Gender have no connection with the amount of skill and ability at all. Basically, the music road is already hard enuff to succeed or survive, no one really cares what gender you are, as long as you play well. And if you ask me, a girl with a short skirt but no skill isn't good, a girl with skill but no short skirts is ok, a girl with skill and short skirt is best. Why?? What works best in this road to success sure makes the day. Bet every band is looking for a pretty girl in their band, cos sex sells!!!
At the end of the day, we are all looking forward to achieving our goals!!

what the ping pong. theres no discrimination here why are you going on about that?

lighten up! Read His first post again! and fored your intentions are great, Maybe is Soft girls arent having their style and sense projected, maybe they dont have the same interests in GAS etc.

Thus having a site/forum dedicated for local female musicians will encourage more of them to step out of the dark. They can have their own threads on "Girl" stuff, which we guys cant understand.

Give it a shot!

I think by setting up a "local female musicians' website, one is going to reaffirm the female/ male divide, which in itself is socially constructed. if one can attach any form of social identity to the website, why not set up a "Local noodles-loving musicians" website or something? I guess it all boils down to the issue of identity and the meanings attached to it. It also shows people what kind of markers take precedence when someone chooses to create a form of identity for a community. Why emphasise that you're a "female" musicians as opposed to perhaps " green coloured loving " musicians? It's not any more different or radical to take the usual social markers and create a "unique" form of identity for a website. We're still reflecting the normality of the world we live in, which reaffirms this divide in our daily lives even as we speak about issues like this. so..maybe something "different" this time?

But in any case, im not dissing the project or anything, I think if one wishes to do anything, one should just go for it. It really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. I'm just stating my thoughts here. So fored, all the best!

don't b too sensitive bout sexism here...it's only like you have NBA and WNBA 2 separate websites...wat's the big deal? nothing wrong with wat TS wants to do... :D

I'm in. I totally skip what the guys have to say in "girl" threads anyway.
They never say anything useful

yeah, they only try to flatter and flatter, but don't say it so generally!

I mean, there ARE good guys out here.

Its just, I don't know, I'd say I won't be like that, but who knows? 8)

Fored, u are posting in one of the most popular local music web/forum, y not try asking James for advice in setting up ur web? :) Do wat u feel is right..

Thanks guys, for the support. I'll most likely still go ahead with it; see whether it works out or not.

And hey, if you guys have any suggestions, please feel free to post/PM! :)

AND if there're any female musicians (looks at Joyz. Kaye, etc) who're interested in being listed (if the site has a directory), you can PM me as well! :D
