i've been reading up on tones lately and people have been talking about warm, round, fat and bright sounds. are they different or do they mean the same thing? whats the difference between them and can people give me some examples of songs with warm, round, fat or bright sounds? cos im dying to know. haha. what im trying to achieve now is the bass sound on "flowers in the window" by travis.

..

I think its this is v subjective. Maybe we can compare songs and classify them under Warm, Bright, Round, Fat etc

Ok, here's mine (offhand):
Fat: RATM Bombtrack
Bright: Any Marcus Miller

what about the "flowers in the window" song by travis? the one where it starts the bass with the slide?

alright, so thats the kind of sound im trying to achieve. how do i get it? it wont come out from my amp right? i'll have to use mixers?

depends alot on your strings, where and how you pluck, and then your amp tones. I think it would be more on the bass and average mids and trebles? the rest is eq

you need to let your strings settle in first, get that "new string" sound out of the way to let the best tone shine through... I've had the same set of strings on my bass for about 2 months already without boiling. I boost the bass and cut the mids and a bit of treble, but just enough to have nice highs when I slap. other than that it's pretty warm :)

personally .. i'd do the same as superkicky .. put a bit more bass and treble and play near the neck pickup to get that "oompf" tone .. if i want a more jaco tone i'd play nearer to the bridge ..

for my bass at least, playing towards the neck pickup will give a more rounded and warm kinda sound. bridge pickup would be sort of growly and .. i dunno, angsty?

my strings are definitely settled in. its been 2 years since i last changed strings. hahaha.

thanks guys for all the advice i need to get the tone i want. still, does anybody knows whats round sound? ive heard them mention this a lot at the mxtabs forums.

is it me or is it quiet in the bass forums lately? haha.

Can someone upload a sound clip of them? Haha.. I sorta kinda confused with all the text. Anyway, it's more understandable if hear than read, right?

think the sound depends alot on the amp as well as the guitar. 'Round' is kinda hard to describe... I remember trying out one of the Ampeg Bass amps in Music Plaza some time back and I had this distinct feeling of 'roundness' of bass.. something to do with 'fullness' and richness of the tone... don't think you can get a nice 'round' tone from a small cheap amp. haha.

so a round sound is a full sound? like, it takes up alot of space?

then say full lah >_> wtf is round. lol

its more than just full... its got to do with the way the notes come on and off too.. think room acoustics help in that respect. its kind of hard to describe. sorry.

Okay ... go listen to Marcus Miller's website and download sound clips. Erm, Run for cover is considered bright ... Power is considered fat ... erm .. i can't think of any already .. MM has a bright tone to itself ...

If you can John Patitucci his songs usually use a more warmer and rounder tone .. not sure whether that helps .. if not i'm sorry .. =)...
