Hi

The guitar is one of the easiest instruments to get started on, which is why it is so popular. Some say "a minute to learn, a lifetime to master". :)

There is no reason why you shouldn't start straight away on electric guitar if that's what you want to do eventually. This might be upsetting for your neighbours before you can play anything decent, but you can always practice at very low volume or not plugged in at all.

If you want a really cheapo electric, you can buy these for $200 or less new. As a beginner, you may want to consider a 2nd hand instrument.

If it's pop/rock type music that you want to learn (sounds like that's what this Denise person is about) then you can get started quite quickly picking up a handful of chords and some easy scales within a few days. Then you just need to practise, practise, practise.

Hi Rachel, welcome to soft.

If you want, you can get a strat copy electric guitar to start off with. These are easy and comfortable guitars which can stay with you for life, as they are also built for professional performance use.

Incidentally, I still have a few Kramer brand ones in my stock, you can come to take a look. Brand new at $180 to $200 only.
Try not to get used ones, as the chance of landing a problematic guitar is high.
Don't forget you need an amp too, these cost $100 onwards.
Other compulsory accessories are electronics guitar tuner, picks, strap, bag, spare strings. You are complete with all these.
If you get from me, I'll teach you how to tune the guitar and change strings.

Lessons:
You can start learning straight from electric, no need to learn from acoustic.
Yamaha school in Singapore is most popular place, can check it out. Or other private schools also fine for basic.
You can even go to take the basic at a Community Centre first, cheapest.

Good Luck.
Mike

so i guess i better start registering myself with the yamaha music school, have check them out n realise tt the course duration is 5yrs. WOAH... but found it quite afforable...

my friend was kind n said he can actually give me his guitar(i think belong to his uncle, must be very old)... but, quite malu right? bringing a old guiat for class... have not see what's the condition yet...

heh.. i was in the yamaha classical course er.. 3yrs back haha.. i signed up for the 3 yrs courseeee but i ran the 2nd year haha  reason cuz its get bored and more bored once u learn the basic.. imagine playing romance de amor from first lesson to 2nd yr  (i cant play it anymore  ) but actualli i quited cuz i taken a likin for rock music.. electric guitars..

and the time crashes wif my school back then.. was every monday 5-6pm 50 bucks a month.. i suggest u just go there and learn the basic den can run oredy.. explore music on ur own.. listen to songs.. try to train urself in music.. (this helps when u wanna compose music.. )

haha.. old guitar more vintage ma.. :D don malu la.. u dono the guitar ur gettin might valued at few thousand bucks :p

anyway if u do not feel good wif other's guitar (cuz their setup might not to ur style) den go choose one urself.. but if im not wrong those yamaha lesson have their own guitars provided for u durin the lesson.. like 10 guitars hangin on the wall...

hope this helps again!

you can learn to play the guitar or electric guitar by yourself. usually start with struming chords. there are chord chart that shows you how to press the strings. just follow and try.

you can start with either a classical/acoustic/electric guitar. if you can get a free one, go with that first. play for a month or two. then you will know what you are looking for when shopping for a new guitar.

yea but james.. i think its realli better to get a teacher to set u on the rite 'path' for the VERY beginning..

cuz lookin at myself... playin shits after quitin the lesson made me regret lah... 2 yrs or all power chords.. onli recently try to make up of those i've missed...

Any questions just PM me =] Hope i can help

Bass guitar is for playing lower, deeper notes that generally support the rhythm of the music. Usually a bass will only have 4 strings (but they can be 5, 6, or even up to 11!!!). A bass has much thicker strings and is usually heavier and with a longer neck than a normal guitar. For people with smaller hands, this can be an issue (but not insurmountable).

Those are the main differences. The techniques for bass are quite different too. The (normal) guitar is also used to support the rhythm of a piece of music, but it is more often used to provide melodic function and solos in a band context.

Of course, there's no reason you can't go against convention and do something the exact opposite of what happens normally.

Hey there is one place i think u mite be interested... there is a shop in bras basah Complex ( ask ur guitaring friends they shld know... it the same building as swee lee). Its on the ground floor. right in front of the escalator going up. U go the left side of the shop, alot of books with guitar scores and tabs to chinese songs. I know these books can get other place, but other place dun hav as much as here. Anyway its cheaper.

Hope my directions clear enough
