Vocal Hangout - General Guidelines

What in the bleeping blazes is a Vocal Hangout?
- A group event for the vocal softies to hang out together, make new friends, and learn vocal tips from each other.
- It consists of two types of hangouts: Vocal Hangout [VH] and Vocal Hangout Chill Sessions [VHC]
- Basically they are casual, non-professional mini-events led by the vocal softies.

The purpose of the hangouts are encouraged as the vocal instrument can only be experienced and learnt from live; we can't judge a good voice or learn from vocal mistakes through tabs or something, unlike the rest of the instruments here :}

What's the difference between VH & VHC?
VHs lean towards hangouts that include learning experiences and/or vocal discussions.
VHCs are more like random social meetups between the vocal softies, to just kick back, relax, make friends and sing. :}

Who is this hangout for?
Pretty much anyone who's passionate about singing. We hope to encourage a rotation of music genres to catch/experience, seeing how everyone has a different background "scene" (I've never been to a pop chinese gig, for example, or some of us who's never gone for a pub gig, to get the gist) and only some of you guys are versed at their own "area" and musical taste. These include growlers, screamers, yodellers, etc...

Who starts these hangouts?
Anyone~ Well basically if you have an idea and want to hang with the rest of the softies, just post a thread or something and we'll see how to work it out. The in-charges will poke their noses in and we'll assist in getting the network in the loop and help oversee and arrange it if it's within our capabilities :D

Wanna join us or be kept in the loop?
PM sage or hecklerkoch your:
- contact number
- email
- soft nickname
- name
if you'd like to be informed or involved in any upcoming hangouts. :D

About the VH / VHCs (by hecklerkoch)

Vocal Hangout - A History

It was a balmy night of another commercialized, invented around consumerism Valentine's Day (though I did spend on dinner and chocolates =P) when the legendary hobbit Sage, inspired by the quality of singers in the Open Mic thread, and feeling a sudden urge to meet her warbling counterparts in Soft and make new friends and share The Knowledge, opened a thread called 'Vocal Hangout!'.

A month (plus exactly a day later), the very first of now three Vocal Hangouts, materialized, to rave reviews by those who turned up at the informal gathering of sorts.

A workshop it was not, after event reports indicate that it was at least a successful and really fun get-to-know party which turned up a few gems among the various singers who sang 'live'.

Vocal Hangout - Evolution

The second vocal hangout was an eleventh hour affair organized by hecklerkoch on the 18th of May, where it was a successful karaoke-cum-socialising session. Not one moment of dullness when we finally met up and go "Oh, so you are bla bla bla. I thought you were bla bla bla. Hahaha!!" and as each one took the microphone in turn, it was a great experience to hear each other belt out hit after hit, and we drank and made merry. Immediately after the session, those who followed to Actor's Pub were treated to a couple of 'live' performances by the legendary FGL and hecklerkoch.

Vocal Hangout Episode III - Rise of The Warblers, was another successful follow-up to the newly categorized VHC (Vocal Hangout - Chill) and the karaoke room was filled to the brim (with some having to sit on the floor. GAH!) but nobody complained nor portrayed a black face and it was a laugh a minute, courtesy of Shawnrick The Entertainer, who enthralled with his flawless R&B singing. Everyone was treated to gems like Grace with her perfect pitch and amazing tone, Tetragrammaton with (very) cool control, FGL with an energetic old style, and of course the legendary Sage, who mesmerized the audience and lulled them with her magical voice. ANDY82 is a versatile chameleon who could tackle the highest notes almost effortlessly. We ended the night with some delicious supper, friendly banter and more picture taking at McDonald's. Everybody was obviously 'lovin' it'.

Vocal Hangout - Now

As you'd probably have known - the Vocal Hangout was originally conceptualized to be part get-to-know-your-fellow-vocalist-softies, and part learn-from-each-other-no-matter-what-type-of-singer-you-are but the experiences of the various organizers made concrete the suspicion that people generally feel more relaxed in a not-so-formal setting, but at the same time, the fact that there are considerably a large portion of the singers who turn up do want to hear and listen to more experienced singers and performers, and pick up tips to improve their singing, is not to be ignored.

The fact that more than 20 of us 'vocal softies' has gotten to know each other better, and willing to contribute in parts, to a more 'formal' event which will benefit everybody - the previous two VHCs obviously were a GREAT and necessary start and lead up to a more organized, beneficial sharing cum socializing session, as first envisioned by Sage.

This current group of people, comprising of wonderful and genuinely nice characters of all ages, shapes and sizes, of all vocal styles, levels of experience and knowledge, is critical to the evolution of the Vocal Hangout, where newbies and vocalist in training can hopefully take away valuable lessons and kickstart their music careers or hobbies.

Vocal Hangout - The Future

As we build the structure, and tie down the people involved, and their contribution and roles accordingly, the next Vocal Hangout will definitely be a more enlightening experience, with speakers from the various scenes and genres, followed by the usual socializing and have-fun sessions, where softies can get to know each other more, and hopefully garner support for their respective music events.

What else to say ah? Gosh, 2.50am liao...
