Actually Dimebag started off with the drums along with his brother, Vinnie. But naturally Vinnie progressed ahead of him so he asked his dad (a country musician/producer) for a guitar. Initially he just posed with the guitar with his Ace Frehley make up on in front of the mirror, but soon he learnt Deep Purple's Smoke On The Water riffs and soon started jamming with his brother. However, when Ozzy Osbourne came out with the Blizzard Of Ozz album with Randy Rhoads on guitar, it quickly gave Dimebag a kick in the ass and he immediately started to really learn the instrument. I read that when Rex, Pantera's bass player first gotten to know Dimebag, he was just learning to play 3 chords on the guitar. But after a whole summer of practicing, he was able to progress by leaps and bounds and was able to shred like a muthatrucker! All hail Dime!!
