Valentines' day song for my babe.

I wrote this little solo for the girl in my life.

It's played over a 2 chord vamp. The progrssion is actually part of a song my band is doing, I was working on the solo late last night for it. And yes it's a love song, I'd like to think of it more as a power ballad to sound a tad bit more manly. I stopped halfway last night due to my sister's loud banging on my door telling me to turn it down.

I tried my best to be as melodic as possible, and of course emotional without sounding like a man screaming and crying like a woman.

Gear setup.
Jem77FP - Tone Bone Classic - Voodoo Labs Analog Chorus - Fender Bronco Solid State 15 Watter.

Neck pickup and chorus for the clean rhythm, Bridge pickup and Tonebone for the leads. Recorded with a pc mic through Audacity.

Take a listen and let me know what you think.

Thanks!

Oh yeah Happy Valentines' Day all.

Hey Christopher amazing chops and sense of melody as usual man!!! The slash and Vai influence is strong in u, do share some playing tips with the general population if you can yeah. Thanks and keep rawkin man!!

LOL Marc you are too kind.

I miss the old days. Remember having to learn UAGM in 3 days to play it in a jam studio without a vocalist? 8) LOLOLZ!

I'm not sure whether I'm the jem universe Chris, but I do own those guitars.
I'm not sure whether we have met before, but I've been hearing your stuff here, you got a great feel man. Great playing! :)

I also took a few lessons from Paul as well. ;)
But really long ago...I don't know whether he remembers me.

I thought the tune had a good feel thru out. A Vai lick from 0:20 eh? :) Again, good feel thru out, but I think some things can be improved?
The more subdued vibrato parts felt more like shivering than vibrato vibrato at certain points. Also, I think you could lay off the chorus, its really robbing you of dynamics here, which would mean you would have to play in a different way (ala Vai on hi gain)... I can hear your picking dynamics (vaguely) but its certainly not coming thru! ;)
Finally... WHERE'S THE WHAMMY BAR?!? :D

Oh yeah, excellent tapping there! Any particular exercises/songs that inspired you to play that?

nice tone, i really like the backing rythem acoustic guitar, bet your girl would like it...but IMO the ending shreading part doesn't sound suitable with the song, but its nice though :D

oooh nice playing! very vai-esque. and i like the tapping lick. is the lick from 0:20 onwards from whispering a prayer?

Yeah I know what you mean. I tried everything, laying off the treble, playing around with the mids and bass but I can't seem to shake off the copius amounts of shrilly treble on the mix. Instead all I get is muffledness. I think it's the mic, sim lim square lelong 5 dollar one. When played live it sounds fine though. Live in my room lah.

The rhythm is actually done using my electric with some chorus for that "jangly" effect.

As for the tapping lick, it's actually a very simple principle.

I'm doing legato with my left hand on the Aminor/Cmaj scale, which is the shape which starts on the 3rd fret of the low E. I do a little sweep first, then tap out ascending notes with my right hand. The last part is done tapping pentatonic notes one octave above...and then with legato from the Amin notes.

I know it sounds damn complicating, but listen to Vai's The Animal from 1.25 onwards and you'll hear something like that there.

Thank you for listening! :)

Dude I'm not really sure whether it's from that song, but it's a signature Vai lick that can be found in much of his songs. I've been hearing him use it since his DLR days, take a listen to the Big Trouble Solo.

Also if you listen to Km Pee Du Wee from 1.00 onwards you'll hear it being used, also in the big ass run in fifths at 1.20.

Thanks!
