Using ipod for vocal samples in live performances

Hi I'm wondering if it's viable to use an ipod for vocal samples during live performances. I was thinking of connecting it to a mixer by a 1/8 to XLR cable. Would I need some sort of pre-amp too? Also has anyone here tried doing this and has any better ideas?

What do you mean vocal samples in live performances? There are very specific use of the term samples - which in this case, may mean triggering of very short vocal phrases like you would with a midi controller. Is that what you mean? If yes, ipod will not be easy to trigger the samples with timing accuracy. If not, you'll need to explain what you mean in more detail.

Yeah, the problem with using the ipod is that there's a chance the latency is going to screw you when it's cued up for play. Also the mixer is going to have a mono channel. You'll need to split that stereo output to 2 mono L/R for 2 channels on that mixer. There's no need to convert to XLR, just 1/4" jacks is fine.

I'm not sure about those ipod DJ stuff that are out there. Perhaps one of them can do that (what do you think ac?). I've not much idea what one of those things are capable of.

But really dir, if it's triggering of short vocal samples, then it's going to be something like the Akai MPC etc.

I haven't tried those, but I think they're a bit of gimmick. I'd much rather use traktor Dj or ableton live or some other soft sampler for this. If it's just simple triggering of samples without a need for beatmatching, any freeware sampler will be fine.... hehe even an ipod.

Another method, dir, if you've got a video suite that supports markers and a jump to markers option, just lay out the samples on the timeline and jump to it when needed.

I can't afford a hardware sampler at this point, so an ipod or a laptop would have to suffice for now. thanks for the suggestions. It's true that the ipod latency might screw me so, i'll probably end up going the laptop route. ac, that's a neat idea. I think you can do that in audition too, so it's all good.
