Using a cabinet with a Vox Pathfinder

I noticed that there was an option to connect the Pathfinder 15 to a different speaker cabinet (8 ohms, 15w). Will a 1x12 cab make it sound louder? I'm not very clear on this. What wattage of speakers can I use in that cab?

Thanks !

A 1x12 will not necessarily make it sound louder, all else being equal, a speaker with a higher db rating will be perceived to be louder - up to a certain point. From a practical perspective though, you're almost always going to get a louder perceived volume due to the design of the speaker & cabinet.

You can safely plug the Pathfinder into any cab that is marked 8 ohm total in resistance, or a 1x12 cab with the sole speaker marked 8 ohms. And marked greater than 15W, so you don't end up tearing the speaker cone due to the volume.

Well... There'll definitely be a difference in tone when using a 12" speaker as compared to a 8" one (this difference is usually it's for the better) but loudness but volume may not be altered.

My suggestion: Get a new amp if you wanna go louder.

Actually, if you don't mind, you could bring your pathfinder over to my house, I have a normal-big sized 1x12 openback, 8 ohm, 90W speaker. Am rather curious how the Pathfinder sounds through my speaker.

modded my pathfinder's tiny little speakers to 10 inchers inside the same combo enclosure. takes a bit of drilling and repositioning....

but its helluva difference.

DemonOfTheFall, (sorry your nick is funny!)

yeah as wot goose said, I swap it with a regular Electro Harmonix 10" speakers. You probably can't get it locally here.

If I remember correctly,
1. You'll have to literally TEAR out the screws from the speakers to the baffle.
2. You'll have to drill new holes on the enclosure as the 10" will have more depth and the whole control panel will need to be shifted to the back.

do this only if you're adventurous and don't value your gear. It involves a bit of tearing and swearing.

Hmm.

Would it be worth it to buy a bigger enclosure so that the knobs and input jacks can be shifted to the front face (on top of the bigger speaker mod) because I find that having to peer over the top of my amp (which is angled backwards) is kinda irritating. :?

But it's just me... anyways I like the tone I'm hearing from my Pathfinder as it is...

crawldaddy,

everything is possible if you wanna invest in the extra time and effort.

for me, I was hoping to slap that damn 10" in and have a quickie but along the way had to rip out a few things and reposition em.

anyway still less work and $$$ compared to a new enclosure for a cheapass amp.

Hmm.

Haha I was kinda thinking of how Chanmin did his 5150, but this time buy new wood and start afresh so as to have proper dimensions to fit the innards.

Then can have a natural wood grain finish

but will try and buy proper wood if I can find wood dealers, and not the Ikea plank division.

misse, she's got my number... and i'm all nuts about it.

ok this sister thing is going to far... i'll keep this private and pm you about her!
