For strats, the neck body fit seems pretty important
try out the guitar unplugged
if you seem to have problems trying to some sound out, there might be some errors in the fitting of the neck
this will not let the guitar wood resonate as much

also, know what type of feel you are looking for
variables like neck width can differ from guitar to guitar

if you have a budget, try to ignore all the price tags and model numbers they put up, and do a blind test of each guitar
you might just surprise yourself

Hmmm, for a John Mayer sound you probably would need an amplifier with overdrive, but I doubt you will need pedals just yet. But you might wanna get an overdrive, a delay and a chorus.

Go for solid state amplifiers.

what?
john mayer sound from amp's drive?
most amp's drive are too crunchy/distorted for that...
i'd recommend getting a super clean amp, and sticking a mild drive pedal infront, like a bd2 or ts. that will be closer...

Yes but only the Japanese fenders are cheaper in Japan, not the Americans I think. Get a Japanese strat is what I'll say.

You know what I saw in Japan? I saw a 1966 reissue firemist silver custom shop piece. Limited to 200 pieces only. Swee Lee sells it for $8kSGD. I saw it in Musicland Shibuya going for $4k... You say lei?

MIA is obviously more prestigious, but nothing special in my opinion...

Honestly, this is the best remark I've ever heard. and the best part is, it's 100% true!

The $$$ you have to spend on an MIA at Swee Lee can be used creatively to get a superior guitar made by Malcolm or some boutique brand. Or, you could get a CIJ and upgrade it and still have oodles of $$$ to spare.

But somehow, it's not the same thing. I dunno why. The prestige and the emotion of owning an MIA is an irrational thing. Honestly, a EBMM Silhouette Special will KILL the MIA strat with plenty of blood and guts. and the price is very similar! and you can have plenty of options! But the nostalgia isn't there...

I can't define it, except to say that getting an MIA is an emotion decision that cannot be rationalised.

Most of the guitar shops in japan are like that. They ENCOURAGE you to try.

Lemme tell you how I bought my latest 20th Anniversary Silhouette. (the extreme right one in the siggy)

They let me pick between a 2006 limited edition JP6, a Japan only limited edition Luke, and this. They put me thru 2 Marshall amps. Valvestates. After 3 to 4 times of me walking out to take a puff to think about it, one sales guy came to me and said: (in broken english) "come... you try now on something else". Then he plugged me into a 100W Hughes & Kettner Triamp (or something) going through a Mesa 4x12" cab. (that's the deal clincher!!!) That blew me away on the 20th, and honestly, my decision was made in less than 30 secs after that. They also took the time comparing the different birdseye maple grades on each neck, and gave FIRM recommendations (none of that "it's up to you" crap) They gave very good and honest advice.

That's how they make a sale. And honestly, our local dealers can learn a lot from them...

I don't think i'm allowed to post pics up yet right?
Anyway, its two toned sunburst with a maple neck and rosewood fretboard.
The staff at the shop were awesome. And they threw in a gig bag, a tuner, a guitar stand, two wires, two picks, extra strings and a cleaning cloth. So thats awesome. I got the Vox ampplug AC30 for the time being, till i can go get my amp.

Oh. And i'm looking for a hard case because i'm gonna be doing some travelling with it and i don't trust the gig bag on that. Any recommendations?

You have to get a photobucket account and post the pictures there. Then it becomes a breeze... Just copy the image code and paste it here and there you go!

Checked out your pics. Beautiful guitar! Literally it shines. That's Japanese craftsmanship for you.
