URGENT Cost of shipping a guitar from eBay

Hey guys, need some urgent help here.
I just won a bid for a Gibson SG Standard on eBay,
Apparently the guy is asking for 700USD for shipping!
My friend is shipping in a LTD EC1000 for only about 100USD, excluding the price of the guitar.
Many eBay people also state shipping worldwide as between 80USD and 100USD.

Anyone here with experience of shipping in guitars from eBay?
What was the price of shipping you paid for?
Really need help.

Thanks in advance!

ask him what carrier is he using. even expensive carriers charge only 300+usd for shipping a guitar. 700usd for shipping a guitar is way too much. you should have asked him for shipping cost before you placed a bid. what you can do now is to ask him what carrier is he using, and to switch to a lower cost carrier.

ask him for the guitar's shipping box dimensions, weight, and shipping location. then you go to UPS website to check the shipping cost of that item (keying in the dimensions and weight) from his shipping location to your location. then try to work it out with him. good luck.

You should have asked for shipping price first before even bid for it. IF you are not willing to pay, you can always request to cancel the deal. Of course he'll most probably report you to ebay for backing out the deal but you have a strong case yourself, US$700 is still a crazy price for shipping.

basically if somethign is too cheap like he gibson is like $500. Then the shipping would cost a bomb. Or otherwise the item would be priced expensive and shipping would be cheap.

Not matter what, should have asked pricing first before bidding.
the most the seller give u bad feedback only. U save ur money...
go make new account lor.
If u dont really buy/sell much on ebay. then u have negative feedback also nvm. just make new account.
If the seller got good reputation, u can be the first to spoil it:) lol.

I suspect you are a victim of the price-low-charge-high-shipping phenomenon that unfortunately, some eBay sellers use. In order to evade eBay taxes, they sell the item for a lower price but charge way higher shipping. How much did you win the guitar for?

I recently purchased a guitar from eBay US and was charged US$150 for UPS expedited. Item shipped out Monday and I received it Saturday.

Oh man, this sucks.
He just said the best shipping price he can find is 508.53 USD.
He says that 100 USD for shipping is if he is located long the coast,
but he says he's in the middle of the country now.

I won the guitar for 850U SD, it has a crack and I've followed and checked that most Gibson SG Standards end their bids at about this price too.

Anyone else has any experience?
Or what do you guys recommend if you were in my shoes?

You can't cancel the deal just like that. It's ebay, not Soft. Only the seller has the rights to cancel your bid, that is under certain circumstances such as bidding from a country he/she does not ship to. Once you click confirm bid, you are sorta obliged to buy it.

Then again, if you're a newbie on ebay and you don't have a lot of feedback, you can just ignore the dude, let him give you an unpaid strike and signup for a new account. Of course it's morally incorrect, but if you can't afford it, there's nothing you can do.

I can cancel the deal? But I already won it man. Haha.
Wouldn't I get reported and stuff?

Man, I'm stuck! I want the guitar, but the shipping is crazy.
I just asked him if shipping to the coast then to Singapore would be cheaper, or if he could bring it to the coast to ship for me.
Hopefully he says yes.
After all, he seemed like he needs the money.

The price of the shipping is crazy. Have you check the price of the guitar locally? maybe you can get a better deal.

Lol. Yeap Just follow kerplunk's advice.
U no feedback then nvm la... morally incorrect but u pay how much more sia!!!!
Not too long ago,i saw on www.ebay.com.sg someone sellign gibson sg standard in faded brown for about 1k. yeap.

I've calculated. If the shipping cost 100USD, which I dumbly assumed it would be. It'd be 950USD in total. Also, since the USD dropped recently again to about 1.38USD for 1SGD, the total would be 1311SGD with hardcase, which is a good price considering people are selling the exact same model on soft for 1.6k to 1.9k without hardcase. The best first hand price I can find is 2560SGD from BGW guitars. So yeah, it's a good deal isn't it?

I think that whole in the middle of the county thing is just bullshit. Its just fishy that the rate can suddenly go down from 700 to 508. Either that or he is just NOT very efficient at getting you a good rate. Who know how much he's trying to make off you from shipping.

But if it comes to a situation where either of you is unhappy about the deal, I suggest you just apologise, state your reasons and walk away from the deal. If he's unhappy and decideds to rip you off, he could just say "ok i'll ship it to you for 100" and subsequently keep the guitar after getting the money. There is some recourse through official channel but its going to be a real hassle and you'll probably feel like giving up halfway. That will really piss you off.

I've never not paid before on ebay but I heard some time ago that the rules now have changed such that sellers can no longer leave you negative feedback. But even if he can, just give him also negative feedback in a factual manner and say that his shipping prices are exorbitant and state the amount. Its also better to get negative feedback than to be reminded about how you were ripped off everytime you look at the guitar.

Less likely if you are buying from a reputable someone or shop but an individual with a low rating just signals trouble in this case.

I just asked him if shipping to the coast then to Singapore would be cheaper, or if he could bring it to the coast to ship for me.

Well done. I think you will be able to sufficiently piss him off that he may call off the deal, with what you've just sent him.

You mentioned he stays in the middle of the country. You want him to travel between 1500 to 2000 KILOMETRES to a city on the east or west coast to send the guitar for you and still keep the shipping at 100USD? The costs he would incur doing that would be way higher than the 500USD!

Just tell him to use Fedex or DHL. It would cost about 200USD to ship a Fender SKB hardcase containing a Stratocaster from Chicago to Singapore, using DHL. Use that as a gauge.

You can give negative feedback if you have a valid reason. They'll prompt you and say something like "You are about to give neutral or negative feedback" etc etc. then they'll show you a list of things like "Have you tried contacting the seller about this" etc etc and they'll let you leave negative feedback if you check every box. Of course ebay will check their records if you've tried in vain to contact the seller, so you can't lie. GOD IS WATCHING YOU (So is Ebay)

Hey guys, thank y'all so much for your help!
Yeah. I think I'll just call off the deal if it doesn't work out.
Anyway I heard of vpost. Is it trustable? And what's the cost like?
Anyone had any experience with them?
I may try them if their price and their reputation is good.
