Tube Screamer

Can someone enlighten me on which was the TS that was really sought after back then?
And what is the closes model of the TS that does the job of the TS back then. Thanks =]

im i need to try your OD man.... wanna see if its better den my TS9 DX for boosting and stacking with my heavier drives....

i got a maxon od-9 for sale if anyone is interested~~~

i have two TS la... i prefer the keeley 808 for my needs...

no apologies necessary...

i own the TS808; it's one of the under-used pedals i have here. i prefer boosting my amp with a sub-$100 Rocktron Gold Rush than this near $300 pedal. not that it's lousy but appeal is personal as they say 8-)

808 reissues are not made exactly the same way as they used to be.(i think it's the IC chip difference). that's probably why you arent 'feeling it' haha. if you have a ts9 and if you're handy with a soldering iron you can easily convert it to an 808. tubescreamers are said to be good for playing metal (boosting other dirt pedals) i dont know how far that's true but it's a really smooth OD. subtle. :)

Hey guys, I know this might have been discussed before in other threads but I couldn't find what I was looking for so I decided to post my question on the Maxon OD808 here.

1) What are the other products out there in the market that are on the same level as the Maxon OD808?

2) For those of you who have taken a step further and modded ur tubescreamers, do share about them if you can.

just wondering, if one were to use, say, a Tubescreamer, for boosting an already dirty, hi-gain tube amp(think metal distortion), would the dynamics and bells n whistles of the said OD pedal go out the window, or would there still be a big difference?

would it be worth it to get the more expensive OD just for a clean boost on a dirty amp and not fully utilise the gain control?

at the moment im using an ibanez TS7 or MSL1 to clean boost my 5150, not to increase gain, but simply to tighten the tone. Good results so far, but would a boutique hi-end OD pedal or the famed 808 improve my tone a lot more?

Well, first of all - I don't think a Tubescreamer is the most dynamic overdrive out there, and I don't think its even considered a dynamic overdrive. I find plenty of other more dynamic pedals out there.

Like what you mentioned - you used your TS7 to do what? Tighten your tone. If you want to get that effect, you wouldn't want to look for a "dynamic" overdrive - you might not get the tightening you want. You COULD get a "dynamic" od that has a bass cut - and that could result in a sort-of tighter tone. Its a balancing act. Compression (or the opposite of dynamic/touch sensitivity) and bass cut (or treble boost) will help tight up dirty tones... and the standard TS does it well because - its compressed and it has a bass cut.

If you're looking for boutique overdrives - I'd suggest looking at designs which are either
1) using very rare components
2) does something (sort of) different from the thousands of TS-clones out there
3) Sounds like what you want

There are plenty of boutique makers - too many just rehash the tubescreamer and THAT'S IT!!!!!!!!!!! - to that, I say "blah". There are some awesome tubescreamer-styled pedals though and those can easily tick off the famed TS808. Anyway, blindfold test will tell you if the "fame" of the TS808 has to do with sound or mojo/vibe/vintageness.

Look up a Rangemaster or Treble Booster. This is an old school pedal wayyyy back in the 60s (actually, I can't really recall the date) and I think it has got something to it...

If you rikes the sound of a the original TS but don't want to spend a mojo sum of money on it, you could get a boss sd-1 and order a 30 USD mod kit and change the chip/diodes symetrical clipping etc which would make you end up paying about half the price for something close to the original TS. =)

hmmm .. honestly... i think the keeley ts808 is da bomb.
i cant stop using it... its really very nice.

i use the analogman maxon od-9 for the gritty Od sounds... its not bad... not wow, but not bad

but the keeley is really being stomped on everyday. shiok....
