TRANCE : VIRUS , NORD or NOVATION?

Yo Headhunter and guys,

I do have a favour to ask you since you´ve gotten into trance. As you know the dilema of home studio producers nowadays is that they tend to lose the attention of audience feedback due to the complete attention of being all alone at home working on tracks. If you can do me a favour and help me review my songs for me, i would gladly appreciate it. They aren´t fully complete masters, just demos, but i would love more feedback on them before i go head over heels producing them to completion. Is it ok with you?

Gladly. How would do you plan to do it? Easiest way is probrably to upload it to something like mp3.com and then the whole world can be your audience!

Yo Headhunter,

Yep, mp3.com is one option, though they take ages to verify it though. I´ve just dumped a track on my mp3 account and is currently waiting for approval, i think it would take 2 wks. Moreover, lately mp3.com has set a rule allowing only 3 tracks displayed per artist. Kinda sad!! I´m rather thinking of sending a whole CD. What do you think?

Well , having never gone the mp3.com route myself, i think it´s wonderful that you´re doing it! I think 3 tracks, altho not as much as you would like , is still a reasonable number of tracks. Eg, Future Music magazine (UK) allows a maximum of 4 tracks for each demo submitted. Workload is the main reason for this since they listen to EVERY track, and there are a lot of demos. This is in reality a blessing in disguise. Similarly, pick the best 3 tracks you have and upload those. And the old adage of ´saving the best for last´ is not a good idea here. Put your favourite track 1st up.

Is it possible to change the tracks you have uploaded say every few weeks tho? Then you could always update your tracks.

2 weeks to clear? That seems a long time. I can´t wait to hear your work parablue!

FM tries to review the demos, but it appears that they´ve got a 3 month backlog. In anycase, it would be great to hear what pblue has composed.

Some of the demo tracks from FM are just that -- demo tracks. But i really appreciate their comments.

Fm! Haven´t gone there yet. But soft.com.sg suppose to have a demo review thingy, i submitted tracks in, but that issue seem to have died off. Anyway, i actually do have some old tracks out on the net, but like i said they are old tracks, waiting to be retracked and many are not trance.

Pls look out for

hey para, I listened to your songs as soon as you put the links here but didn´t have the time to write till now. This is a very brief summary.

You have good ideas in the electronica songs. However some of them do sound a little sloppy. I have done songs where i don´t use quantise or loosen the feel a bit by not hard quantising, however, some bits sound a little too loose. Other than that, very good effort, good ideas.

However, I´m impressed with your TRANCE songs. They sound like they are ready to be played in a club even now. I´m into trance producing and yours sound a lot better than mine

. Good ideas, good execution. In a nutshell! My 2 cents and thanx for giving us a listen!

Anymore songs?

Yep, i never use quantise. Jus felt they were too mechanical everytime i put them on. But lately, been checking out on some groove quantise stuff, i think that is probably the best one.

The electronica songs were done 3 yrs ago, going to retrack them some day as soon as i find some weird instrument players, like there are so many ideas to put those "chinese instrument" musicians etc.

More stuff would be out soon.

para, are you talking about things like the ´erhu´ or chinese 2 stringed instrument? I love that sound! Good idea, wonder how it will sound in an electronic music setting?

Yep, those instruments are great if played well. I had a friend who bought one Erhu and wanted to learn, he chased everyone(including me) to the next room. Finally he gave up as he "Couldn´t stand it!".

Not so easy huh? Just like every instrument worth learning, it takes time to master. I´ve seen the erhu played twice in my life. Once in beijing by a group of old men in a square. And 2 years ago in london, by a chinese ´busker´ who played his instrument thru a little amp with reverb. It was the most hauntingly beautiful sound i have yet heard. I believe it beats it´s western counterpart hands down as a solo instrument.

Btw, i´m just chuckling to myself how funny it would be for someone to come into this thread expect to see something on VA synths ... hehe

talking of which i just saw one, a real one that is for sale at around 200 bucks. Wonder if i should get it? Just for kicks coz i love the sound and i don´t think any synth can get all the nuances of it.

Hiya, Virusindigo,

yep, nice to see there are trance lovers in this part of ´town´. I dunno if you;ve been there yet, but i think it would be cool for you to check out Trance Republic forum. You can find it doing a google search.

Anyway, virusindigo, can you tell me more about the novation? is it able to create your own arpeggios aside from fixed preset patterns?

trance lovers!

yes virus indigo thingie, i was sure the virus/indigo would be the instrument to set my trance tracks on fire so i tested it at turnkey in london and it does sound awesome! However, i tried the novation ks4 and ks5 and i think their sawtooth based sounds are meatier. Next to it was a moog voyager and while only monophonic, it really does sound beefier than any VA or rompler workstation sound. However, i console myself with the fact that if people can make great tracks with a virus, then it´s good enough for me. Meantime, Im saving my bucks!
