To Whitestrat

Take care of your hearing guys... Damage is irreversible, and starts undetected. By the time you find out, it's too late.

+1 to this. esp to those ppl who blast music in their ears with their ipods and mp3s. i'm already starting to develop hearing problems due to playing at obscene volumes while jamming. sad to say its not worth it.

get well soon whitestrat! :D

This might sound weird, but is your balance affected?

A valid question. But no, balance is not affected mainly because it's the middle ear that controls balance. Some manipulation of the ear drums can lead to dizzyness, but that's temporary and should pass in a few minutes.

My middle ear was not affrected. Neither was my ear drum. It was the ear ossicles that were affected, and corrected. A cheem problem. Thankfully, I had a highly accomplished ear surgeon who handled my case.

Thanks.

Might I suggest musician's ear plugs? They attenuate the volume by 15 to 25 dB, depending on which ones you buy, but allow you to play at high volumes to get your tone on stage and in the studio, but you hear a lot less. Some frequencies might be reduced, and the sound is not as "hi-fi" as you might like it to be, but you can definately hear what's being played, yourself, and your band, and it saves your ear drums.

I got those nasty ear infection recently ....the pain was unbearable.

Get it checked by an ENT. Not a GP. ear infections, especially severe ones can be a tell tale sign of a deeper problem, as in my case. I don't wish what happened to me on anyone, but if it does happen, seek specialist help... We are musicians. Our hearing is too valuable to lose to a germ.
