Tips for bass drum sound

Hi guys,

i am using a Pearl rhythm traveller n my bass drum sets relatively very much softer than the snare toms n cymbals . When i do recordings e bass drum is almost inaudible.

Any tips to rectify the problem ? I have got ring mufflers on all the toms n snare.

Is it a problem with the kick pedal or the drum skin ?

How many Mics are you using to records your drums?

The position of the mics also play a factor, and if all else fails, play softer with your hands and harder with your feet to balance the sound levels.

Thanks for response

bigblackbear it could be because the bass drum is more compact (slimer) than other bass drums. i'm not too sure though.

I think that should be the main problem , but the toms are also half the size of other standard kits but they are relatively louder than the bass

Haha i am using only one mic to record the drums , n it is done concurrenly with the rhythm guitar playing . I dont have mixer n enough mics so ya ... poor mans' methods

My position of the mic is pointing towards just in front the toms

myner try cutting a microphone hole in the bass drum reso skin. or. use a trigger for the bass drum.

Thanks for the suggestion but i am seeking to increase the volume of the bass drum itself for jamming purposes.

Oh, so is the bass drum too soft in your recordings, too soft for jamming or too soft for both purposes?

Maybe you can try placing the Mic a little lower so that it is of the same level as the bass drum instead of the toms.

And you cant really help it if the bass drum was built that way (slim dimension)

And i forgot to mention that the Toms sound louder even though its half-sized, because they do not have resonant heads, which make the attack of the toms higher than normal if i'm not wrong.

Thanks for the toms information Rettihdrah, yeah i guess the drum kit really is limited. It is soft for both jamming n recording.

I have got evans g2 head on the batter side and the stock pearl resonant skin. The tension is probably med-tight

I managed to get the sound level for the bass drum higher when i removed e pillow inside it which came from the previous owner.

Forgive my noobness as i always thought the pillow was not the cause for the bass drum being so soft. However, the removal of the pillow has created a bass sound that sounds loud but funny. It used to sound soft but right.

There is a loud bang sound that decays into a buzzing sound on the resonant side . Overall it sounds like buang buang.

Would changing the resonant skin into something of a better brand help ? Or would cutting a hole in it help to decrease the buzzing sound.

Do you have any sample recording that we can listen to?

You might want to put the pillow back in if it sounds better.

Think of the microphone as a touch light. There is an invisible ray. The area where you point the microphone will be the loudest.

Try pointing it towards the bass drum and you will get the 'kick' of your life!

may i ask for those plastic round pads to be pasted at the heads where the beater hit.. do they help in anyway in reduce volume? or they just alter the sound produced to a nice 'click' instead of 'thump'

Get a proper drumset if you want a proper sound ! Don't expect a cat to roar like a tiger.
