Thoughts on the ac15

am seriously considering purchasing a vox ac15 custom classic. preferably with celestions. tried it out with a strat and boy does it sing! haha. creamy OD too. woot. wanna hear your thoughts bout it - celestions, stock, or anything at all. haha.. oh yeah heard some stuff bout low headroom as well. feel free to reply!

if you use pedals often, ask if you can try it with your pedals/pedalboard and see if it works well.

i had an AC15CCX with the celestion blue

it sounded good with low to medium gain pedals

great for ambient rock/U2 stuff, blues, classic rock (led zeppish)

but with aggressive mid to high-gain pedals (Menatone KOTB, BJF Dyna Red, Mad Professor Mighty Red, MI Audio Tube Zone) it reacted strangely.. flabbily.. not good for anything heavier than hard rock.. AC/DC or G&R at max..

hmm.. i use a ocd v4, randolph modded Ds-1 and a BB preamp. not very high gain pedals. and i don't play metal so shouldn't be a prob. wad about the differences in the sound of the alnico blue and wharfdale?

and the low headroom as well..?

oh and on a different tangent here.. haha. recently heard orange announce the launch of the dual terror - essentially a tiny terror, which i quite like, with 2 channels. another option for a new amp.. :-D

i think its not really about the wattage, and more about the Class A design and how it reacts.. best would be to bring your pedals to city music and test them with both amps

It doesn't take pedals well and breaks up at higher volumes

ac15s can be modded for higher headroom so that they dont break up easily.

But in general, if you'r a pedal player i'd advise you to stay away from acs. Unless you'r intending to just use an overdrive to saturate the amp's primary drive - ah then that would work.

Pedals into vox cleans = strictly a no-no cos the cleans arent even cleans in the first place! hoho....
