Things that happen in a jamming studio ...

Security cameras cannot supervise everything, and the owner doesnt always keep his eyes on all cameras. Sometimes he is playing games or doing other stuff, like entertaining enquiries. The best is to have a security guard in every Jam room. A Bhaii Singh security guard with baton is best.

for me, so far, while I have been working, I've had :

1) Ppl scolding vulgarities at us and refusing to pay due to a 'defect' with the keyboards, claimed that there was no sound when he pressed hard, and I mean very very hard. The worst thing is that they were adults in their late 20s to mid 30s. Totally behaving like kids!
2) Ppl bringing drinks in cans, packets and the worst, plastic, into the studio to drink, and guess where do they throw them when they're done? You guessed it. They just throw them all over the room.
3) People deliberately jumping on the bass kick and causing the skin to tear.
4) Last minute (like 11pm at night) book 1-2am jamming, then in the end refuse to end the jamming, 15mins later coming down to tell me they want to extend till 3am.

I still do try to keep a smile on my face even after those things happens, as the customers are in the end, afterall, top priority. Other than that it's been quite pleasant working. I do enjoy the short chats with customers when they enter/leave the studio and also bands that play great music, new or old.

liquor and beer into a studio is a must have. i think the jam folks need to invest on a a small ikea table or shelves to we can put our beer/booze on it \m/ and 1 more thing. !

Yes, beer and all is nice, but you have to understand that it'll cause more problems. Some people are disgusted by the smell of the alcohol and have a bad impression of the studio. Also the people who drink may become drunk and who knows what they'll do. All the rules are set in place for different reasons, please understand.

10) Bringing pets such as cats into the studio (just cos they r singing 'Cats in the Craddle' .. dun ask me wat song is tis.. i also dunno.. haha)

Haha, Skid Row.

Anyway, I went to this studio and had a talk with the uncle. A casual conversation, he told me people stole a double bass pedal! What the heck!? He even said people borrowed his mp3 cable without returning. The uncle did a great job keeping the studio clean each time before a band comes in for practice so that's a really awesome place to go to.

It's usually the people who spoils the environment.

quite frankly,i don't understand how drummers can break cymbals, toms or even drumsticks..

even if u r a rock drummer,u hit hard, but not hard enough to break a drumstick into half(unless the drumstick is already very weak).

like my ex drummer, breaks a brand new drumstick after EACH drumming session(means breaking a new stick after about approximately 1 and a half hours of hammering, imagine that).

sometimes i wonder if they are hammering the drums out of passion or just pure anger...haiz:rolleyes:

Well, sticks-wise I think your drummer is playing rimshots but hitting damn hard on the snare/tom together with the rim. Cuz my ex guitarist NEARLY broke my sticks (a Zildjian 6A) while playing.

Even my Vater 5A sticks, which is supposedly thicker than the former sticks, has a very nice chip/dent near the part where it meets the rim on the snare. And yes, he's playing very hard.

Wheareas when I play, my sticks hardly show any similar signs. So I think it boil downs to the drummers technique.

As far as I can remember from I learnt from my drumming instructor, improper hitting of cymbals (especially when you hit with the stick perpendicular to the cymbals) leads to cracked cymbals. But I heard from another drummer friend metal sticks also contributed to cracked/dented cymbals.

O.o i tot there was only one way of hitting it and just hit it with the tip of the stick?

(i know little about drums so pardon my ignorance in it by asking!)

I think he's referring to the angle or so.

But still, it's the force used that is the main factor. As they say, its harder to learn how to drum softly than loudly.

force used you mean.

It's actually the angle at which you hit. Its... uh. can't remember which one of Newton's laws. Dang, I really need to revise my physics.

Diff angle = different pressure.

Since Pressure = Force/Unit area.

If F is constant, but if you hit at a flatter angle, there will be more unit area = less pressure...

Hey gothviruz,

I think you should make house rules and put the notices in every jamming room. Something like what Velvet Joint used to have. Some of the rules were funny though. :D

There are house rules.. but things still happen.. rules are still broken. It's part and parcel of being in this biz.

The sad thing is that a lot of $$ spent to replace these broken, swapped or missing items shortly after they have just been replaced. Especially if the crew failed to check them before and after a session when it gets too busy.

And some jammers r just being totally negligent, irresponsible and couldn't care less since the things do not belong to them, kids especially.

Sometimes they cancel their bookings at the very dot last minute, or never call to inform the cancellation. Worst is that they didnt even bother to pick up our calls when all we need to know was whether they r coming. That couple of hours lost is business $$ to us. No $$ how to run biz? Ya, kids dun understand this shit.

Drummer mistakes antipsychotic medication for paracetamol (bog standard headache tablet) and falls asleep mid-set whilst at the drum kit 30 minutes later ;)

Bloody drummers lol. they're always the troublemakers ;) Give them a bucket of lego and throw them in a room and they are happy for hours lol :-D

Don't ask what antipsychotic medication was doing in a studio in the first place lol. It's UK recording studios - strange things happen
