The Third Place & HeartRock Singapore

darn my camera still on loan to a friend la... if not wud've taken a few for fun :p i think project ultra sound was interesting man! hope someone took a few pics... never seen effects used to that level in singapore before (other than for techno-ing, which... not very interested in)

CrispyEgg, some suggestions for 'sound' improvement.

1. Playback some cds before the show and listen how the sound system response. This is to 'normalise' the system. Fine tune with speaker placement and Graphic Eqs. If the cd also don sound good to you, then you will be in a difficult position. This will also align your ears to how loud the vocals should be compared to the other instruments.

2. Delegate crew to standby stage for setting up the bands. Sound engineer should stay at the board. You never know when someone needs to speak and the mic level is not up.

3. Use the headphone for determining which channel is what signal (troubleshooting) and for cueing cd playback. For live mixing, really got to listen to the 'live' sound.

4. Once the mix is stabilized, do a quick check by moving around the room to listen if the mix is ok.

5. Have compressors, reverbs and delays ready. These helps to make a good mix better!

Yes, we can only get better!

* might want to consider micing up the bass drum, helps to fill the bottom frequency.

wow man, thanks so much! :D haha i'm still learning ;) n that really really helps...

just my own feedback to the suggestions...

1) I was totally unprepared to do a full setup including a tuning of the system because i think they've made a few minor changes and i had to get myself familiar with operating the basics and isolating the unavailable channels first. and the graphic EQs i dont have authority to touch. =X

2) it was actually a solo job. my friend was free so he happened to come by, i got him to help me later on in the gig but he's still abit blur but that's ok he's a fast learner and an awesome friend. he's 5stringedsoul on soft btw, :D

3) there's a constant sound issue because of the layout of the cafe... small room, but relatively wide. very awkward for a live band. the best "outputs" i've heard so far are acoustic sets, they sound amazing. also because the system is very sensitive, if a full band plays, it's hard to push the vocalist up to match the levels. previously i had to turn off the mics on all the amps including the bass because the band refused to turn their volume down =(

4) aiye. point taken.

5) 1) Effects rack isn't working, they're in the midst of getting it replaced... only the reverb rack is working, i think the comp is out too (awfully sad)

hey all, do feel free to give more comments if there were any problems or such! even if it's a criticism =X haha

CrispyEgg, this is why live sound is so fun. if the gig is a monthly thing, you might wanna form a team of SOFTies who are interested in production work to make the performance top notch.

some suggestions
* face the amps toward the musicians instead of the audience (this might satisfy the musician and at the same time, solve your direct sound problem)
* feed only vocals to the monitors

hey the idea of getting more softies to help is interesting... altho right now i have a few friends who are interested in committing to coming down if it's a scheduled thing...

*yup we do that @ the third place... but there's a cable problem and i couldn't move the 2nd amp aka keyboards amp into a monitoring position...

*ahh that i always practice... esp in small settings... it's just slightly frustrating when u get vocalists who arent used to not-point-the-mic-towards-the-foldback-monitors... get lotsa squeaks and whistles now and then...

*********in response to James' idea, anyone else wanna help out for heartrock gigs @ thethirdplace?
