just curiously, why look for a paid gig? usually paid gigs will personally ask certain bands that they know can meet a certain standard... i've noticed newly formed bands asking (even some charity) gig organizers to pay them, and it's... i don't know, degrading? music is my expression, even tho it may be my bread and butter in the future, it's still ART VALUE first, profits second.

why look for a paid gig? dont you know that everyone prefers a paid gig?

you know why? for some its not about profit....but its pay tha taxi fare and it slowly pays for the gears and the food you eat afterwards playing on that venue.

Yes I agree with you that it is the arts that is valued first but asking to be paid is not degrading. What it really does is put your moral a notch higher since you can concentrate more on doing music and not with the logistics.

for the certain standard you are talking about... there should be no standard.
music is art and art should not have any standard. if there is a standard then all of us will sound the same. yuck.

It is not wrong to ask to be paid. It is not about profit.
It does not degrade you and your musicality.

Being paid a REASONABLE to both parties (organizer and performer) amount will be appreciated. You ask me where to get the money to pay the performers? Its a matter of how organizers creativity on how to snip out from sponsorships bucks for the performers. then with this it will be a self thriving event...everyones happy.

well a paid gig to me would the usual soft bread and butter (art) with that hefty cream on top (bucks).

What you say is very contradictory. If there is no standard, any tom, dick or harry can take some sticks and hit it together to make some form of noise, and call that music, and demand to be paid.

Music can be seen as another form of product, if its good many will buy it, if it's lousy, little or no one will want it at all.

So you think that you are very artsy fartsy, and your music is fantastic. But that does not matter at all, if the rest think that you suck.

You asking for money, of course its about profit. The way you put it, it's like you are very high up on the pedestal, you are heaven send is it?? Make money means make money, no need to mask it upon some 'greater good', sound just like NKF saga.

Money will lead to moral and principal decline, because people pay money for what they want to hear, not what you want to play. Get that right!!

End of day, if you are really good, and you ask for money, people will likely pay you. If you suck, just accept that fact, you will have the same happiness and satisfaction as the other john. No need to be a sour puss.

Guys, with all due respect to the topic of the thread, and to HeartRock who spends an obcene amount of time/effort planning gigs AND making it happen.

Lets stop here.

There's been discussions like this already and its tiring. Really.

>>>>>>Hey they can do that! Have you heard of John Coltranes late albums? It is noisy but people like it (like me!)... progressive is your new word for today (click! Click! http://www.dictionary.com)

Contradictory to what? Maybe it contradicts what you believe in - Hey are you an organizer? If yes then use your right brain and be creative and be REASONABLY generous to those WORTHY bands. Music thrives then everyone is happy.

>>>>>> Yes I am from heaven...now lets get it on...Let say you are paying (which you are NOT doing anways)...Nobody is getting rich so is NOT profit. If you have problem with NKF saga go to www.nkf.gov.sg/forum/ihateyou/ihateyoutoo forum.

Money DOES NOT lead to moral decline. Sorry as I dont share your innocent sentiments.

Your talkin about standard? Post your "standards" here and we will listen and jot them down.
These aspiring bands needs to hear this so they will know. Then if they conform to YOUR standard then they will be in that BOX you want them to conform to.

To all the bands there - DONT LET THIS CLOWN CLAMP YOU DOWN. There is no such thing as a standard in art. Strive to be different. Those heroes you looked up to now are before labeled "different" thats why they are there now. Singapore art is not striving because of all this bookish standards that is limiting the potential you have. If you want art free your mind and not conform to others expectations.

Challenge your assumptions not challenge others opinions as mr mikemann is doing here.

Mikemann if you are acting like a father to these aspiring bands... nurture them, advice them, guide them dont tell them they suck...what is this Singapore Idol??!?!?! and yes do not not act threatened as if this is an attack to your beliefs. It is not about you.

I answered Crispy Eggs question and mine was a question answered by HeartRock - I am satisfied.

so my band is good - are you paying?
