The Telecaster posse...

Got this baby earlier in the day for $800. Apparently this was manufactured by Matsumoto Musical Instruments Union in the 70s. Sen ash body with maple neck and fretboard. The neck humbucker sounds big and beefy, while the bridge pup has that punchy twang to it. Weighs in at about 3.4kg. This one's a keeper alright!

Wow I'm really turned on after looking at all these awesome tele's. Now i'm thinking of getting my first one!
Nothing big though probably something below 500 bucks since i'm still a student. Anyone has any gripes or
comments on tele's from Smash, Squier, Stagg or craftsman? Probably looking to get one of these.

craftsman teles are seriously awesome even in stock condition for the price about 200-ish...then you can use the rest of your budget to upgrade the parts and turn it into a killer tele.

Ohhh niceee. I'm quite inclined to the Smash Tele's though. Went down to SV the other day cause my friend was getting his first strat
and the smash guitars really impressed for their 200+ prices. Shall go try out tele's all round soon!

Save a little bit more and get yourself a Squier Classic Vibe 50's Telecaster. This baby's a real gem! Just check out TDPRI.com and do a search on the forums and you'll see the numerous accolades heaped on it! Swee Lee currently sells it for $900+ but you can get it shipped in by Brendon from BGWGuitars.com for just a little over $600.

Thanks. As of now, it's just being held by a double-sided tape. I plan to buy a tele pickguard and cut it in half so at least the holes will already be there and ask a luthier to just drill the holes. It's only a fabricated pickguard by the luthier who made the guitar.

I just checked again the pic of the La Cabronita, I don't see anything unsual on the headstock. To me, it's just a plain tele headstock. please enlighten me what's unusual about it.: )

I tot this is la cabronita. Maybe I was wrong.

Hey dudes and dudette's! I went down to Peninsula and Parklane today to try out the Smash Telecaster from SV and the Craftsman Telecaster from City Music. I brought down my own pedals, cables and amplifier to try to limit the only variable down to the guitar. Can't really do much about the acoustic dynamics of the room though ah well. Anyway i was really amazed by the build quality of both actually. Very impressed by the craftsmanship for a 200+ guitar in both cases. I would like the share abit of my thoughts about the two for those who are interested.

Smash TG lite Telecaster - S$260
Likes - Build was solid / (Craftsmanship was really good imo)
Neck profile and smoothness /
Tuners /
Action was pretty good /
No dead frets /
Bridge feel when palm muting /

Dislikes - Pickups weren't fantastic but definitely decent / (Well it's 200 bucks)
Finish wasn't thin enough to see the wood grains / ( Not the guitars fault, it's just me! )
Stock Strings / (They felt abit cheap and i busted the highest E string while bending. In my defence it wasn't even a full bend. Don't hate me please! SORRY SV but thanks for being so professional about it :D )

Oh i also tried their other model which was the TG 1. The only difference the TG 1 had was that it's body was Basswood rather than Ash. Has the same likes and dislikes but overall the tone sounded more dead. Less prevailent harmonics on the TG 1 model which i dislike.

Overall sound: The neck pickup was really warm and round sounding. The Middle position was very balanced and even. Loved it. The bridge was decently twangy and didn't sound too thin with distortion.

Then i headed down to Selegie road.

Craftsman TL 30 Telecaster - S$196
Likes - Build was solid as well
Action was decent
Headstock looked quite like the real deal ( Apart from the logo of course )
Finish ( Could see more of the natural wood grains even with the coloured finish )
Tuners were smooth
Bridge

Dislikes - Neck profile / (The neck felt like it was getting a little fatter as you went up the fretboard. Could be just me )
Bridge / (Hindered palm muting a little but nothing major. Not sure of the different names of the bridge types though)
Bumps / (There were dings at the end of the neck closest to the body. But the salesman said that it was a display piece)
Neck / ( The sound when playing in the middle of the neck sounded a little more dead)

Overall sound: Neck pickup was warm as well. Middle was also nice and balanced. Bridge was very twangy but sounded a little too bright and i had to turn up the bass eq for a fuller distorted sound.

Overall Comparison:
Hmmm i'm actually at a loss to which guitar i prefer more. They both have their ups and downs. The biggest difference to me was the brightness of the sound of the two, the craftsman having the brighter and more twangy tone. Possible due to the Alder body as compared to the ash or it could be the pickups. Not too sure. And yeah obviously the craftsman is cheaper, but price wasn't really a factor when i was testing the guitars. Hmmm.. i'm more inclined to the Smash TG lite though. (Well not only because i feel bad for snapping the string =P ) Overall i think that if i get the Smash, a change of pickups could make it my permanent post rock axe :D

Thanks for reading! Feel free to comment and correct me if i made any errors. Still quite new to the community.

I would go with the Smash TG Lite, ash teles are more "traditional" IMO. Upgrade the bridge to a Wilkinson and swap out the pickups with the leftover money and you should be good to go!

Yeah i'm quite inclined to go get the Smash tele too but no rush. How much would one of those bridges set you back? The Smash tele didnt have a string thru body though. There weren't holes at the back of the body. Not sure which bridges would be compatible.

The Wilkinson bridge is dual-loading, so it will be compatible with both string-through and top-loading teles, but be sure to check the string spacing first to see if it aligns correctly. SV Guitars sells the Korean Sung-Il manufactured one but TYMC sells the Gotoh manufactured one, both go for about $50+.

Tried KGarage yet?
I preferred KGarage over the other two brands.

Oh yeah I totally forgot about that! It's also an ash body/maple neck tele and it's made in Japan. Definitely worth a try! You can find it over at TYMC, slightly cheaper than the Smash TG Lite if I recall correctly.

Hey i was wondering if it is possible to coil tap/split a rails pickup for teles. I was thinking of getting a rails pickup for the bridge pickup of the tele i have yet to get so as to get more punch from it. However i wondering if it is possible to split the coils and still get a single coil sound. It would make the guitar awesomely versatile!

Yes you can
:)

Ohhhh niceee. But they probably won't really sound like authentic single coils right? Considering it's kinda like half a single coil so the dynamics ought to be different.
