The Soul Asylum thread

Just wondering, anyone here likes Soul Asylum? They're a great but underrated band and Dave Pirner is an excellent song-writer. If you like country-influenced alternative rock, check them out.

I got introduced to this band by the track "Runaway train" that aired on Class 95 and Gold 90.5 occasionally. I thought it was an excellent song, and that was how I went and picked up a copy of The Silver Lining, their 2006 album. Now, I'm also checking up their older songs from the early 90s, which was when they wrote songs like "Black gold", "Misery" and of course "Runaway train".

One special thing about them is their frequent usage of both acoustic and electric guitars for a multi-layered, really sweet sound. I play both acoustic and the electric, and I find that when mixed together, it really works. So that's a stand-out point for me. I liked every song on The Silver Lining album. One of the few albums I have that I can safely say I love 'em all.

So yeah, any love for Soul Asylum here? Cheers!

R.I.P. Karl Mueller, bassist. Managed to record bass on most of The Silver Lining, but unfortunately succumbed to cancer before the album was completed.

great college rock/alternative band i must say!
still remember covering "runaway train" and "misery" during my sec school days at VIVA jamming studio at bukit timah road (closed already, this also used to be a laser disc shop with jamming studio behind!)

marchtwelve covered "misery" (Epic fail!!) during our "rock your world: speak good engrisshh campaign" at timbre.
hahaha

mwahahah, viva, thats a name i have not heard in years.

the building still standing along upper bukit timah. Even the overhead bridge round there is still the same from 17/18 years back.

anyway, soul asylum, bought some albums from them back in 90s, like the stuff, but didnt really follow through the years

class 95 play runaway train often during their rock weekend special. Same goes to poison's every rose has its thorn

ya class 95 sure play those songs for soft rock weekend.

but hey, at least they still get some airplay ;)

It certainly brought back good memories while listening to their songs now. I once played "Misery" during a band competition. :p

oh man, soul asylum. that really does bring back memories of secondary school... and EugeneSmasher, its not true that 987 won't play great music from the 90s. i actually heard this song on 987...

...back in the 90s... :p

i think its a little-known fact round these parts that Soul Asylum hailed from the same minneapolis scene that spawned such seminal acts as Husker Du and the Replacements. and that aforementioned husker du actually played a one-off reunion show (less mustachioed bassist) at a benefit for the late Soul Asylum bassist Karl Mueller.
