SEA Games: Ten-man Singapore hang on to beat Vietnam 3-2
Ten-man Singapore survived a late onslaught to beat Vietnam 3-2 in a Group B match at the Nakhon Ratchasima Municipal Stadium on Monday.
First half own goals by Quang Thanh and Long Giang gave the Lions the lead but Isa Halim was sent off in the 29th minute following two yellow cards in as many minutes.
Shahril Ishak made it 3-0 with the break approaching, running on to meet Khairul Amri’s diagonal pass before slamming the ball past Tram Duc Wong in the Vietnam goal.
Vietnam pulled a goal back in the 54th minute thanks to Phan Thanh Binh slotting a loose ball home after the Singapore defence struggled to clear their lines.
The Lions had to withstand the expected second half onslaught but their cause was helped somewhat after Le Tan Tai was shown a straight red card for elbowing substitute Hafiz Osman as both were going for the ball down the touchline late on.
In the third minute of injury time, Indonesia referee Jimmy Napitupulu awarded Vietnam a penalty kick after Hafiz had handled the ball in the box.
Le Cong Vinh sent the Hassan Sunny the wrong way from the spot.
Singapore will now face Malaysia – who had beaten Laos 4-0 in the group’s other match – on Saturday in their final preliminary round match.
Singapore: Hassan Sunny, Shahril Alias (Hafiz Osman 74’), Baihakki Khaizan, Ismail Yunos, Juma’at Jantan, Isa Halim, Tengku Mushadad (Sevki Sha’ban 69’), Shahril Ishak, Ridhuan Muhamad, Khairul Amri, Fazrul Nawaz
Wellll...The Lions got lucky to get tat 2 own goal advantage. I didn`t see the live match cos was at work, would have been fun to watch the whole game. Oh well...Malaysia is next.
