The Post Rock Community in SG

I have always wondered how popular was the scene like in SG. Do many people actually listen to western post rock like Mogwai or Explosions in the Sky or Japanese post rock like Toe, Te', Mono, Miaou, or even LITE which has math rock elements.

If so, is it ideal to play post rock at gigs here in SG, seeing that its almost totally instrumental and may not appeal to the public IMO. Please discuss.

Anyway, POST ROCK FTW!!!

Please sapport my bro aye kaye bro as his little troupe of noise makers otherwise known as I Am David Sparkle opens for NYC-based Japanese band Mono on 3 July. You can get their EP from KittyWu Records or bro e bro (kittywurecords AT gmail DOT com). Good stuff cannot bluff.

They will also be performing on 27th Sept with B-Quartet and the re-tooled COncave Scream.

There is, of course, Documentary In Amber which is with us. Their self-titled EP can be found at HMV. Go get yourself a copy!

Btw, Toe will be playing in KL in August if that does anything for you. :)

I think most people here does or have at some point listened to the major post-rock groups, (eits, sigur ros, gy!be, mogwai et al) but not many actually do try to search for newer stuff.

The "post-rock" movement itself is getting kind of stale but the newer bands I find are putting out some interesting stuff, and blending genres. There's also more of an overlap in math rock and post-rock nowadays, which is good. I'm finding more and more of a post-rock influence in newer bands that actually have vocals. (well actually most have an eits sound). (also check out efterklang, eaten by tigers, my dad vs yours, gregor samsa, battles, grails, kinski)

Also the post-rock scene in certain countries like Australia, China, Taiwan and also Malaysia are oft-overlooked. There are some pretty awesome bands hailing from these nearby regions. (Laura, Because of Ghosts, Dirty Three, wangwen, Godot, 8mm Sky, Sugar Plum Ferry, Damn Dirty Apes, akta angkasa)

I think the local instrumental bands should get together and form a 'post-rock' fest every once in a while. :)

I think the Platform-and-MrMisse organised annual gear whoring event TAGS has a live compoent these days... Quite a few post-rock/ soundart acts were featured before.

Most of the traditional post rock arrangements are quite lame. It all depends on when you're exposed to them. If you're new to it, it's quite a nice change in direction, after that, the amount of utils just goes down the drain. Even mogwai understood that, and gybe simply just stopped.

gy!be split to a dozen or so groups and have never looked back. Of those, ASMZ and Set Fire to Flames are still worth listening to, imo.

well, I'm now currently into lots of Japanese post rock and I hardly think its lame or the arrangements are rubbish. In fact its so technical its just amazing to see them pull it off. Japanese post rock bands have a knack of having inhuman drummers with sick rhythms and unbelievably head banging riffs. Seriously everyone should try to listen.

To me, I have always frowned upon SG's scene to be too mainstream and that the general public wouldn't accept instrumentals at a gig or just pass it off as boring.

My band is somewhat a post rock band and we played an instrumental gig at the arts house about a month back for ultrasound. I think the response wasn't that bad, I guess it lies in catchy riffs and some up beat stuff. However we still fear our music won't appeal to the public. My band is still working very hard though to bring up good material, hopefully to uplift the scene here.

I think Post rock is fairly still acceptable and pleasant to hear. People just need a nudge of encouragement to go listen. Whereas sludge and drone are truly the alternative of alternatives, maybe much too hard to accept on a larger scale.

You're not serious right? Name me all the local post rock bands in the scene already and you won't need to use all your fingers to count I assure you that.

I think it's like rock but done with a bunch of random chords by some guys who can't seem to keep time
also sometimes it's loud

Yeah, post rock is good. I'm trying to get into the local scene here, in sydney, and always looking out for new bands to listen to. Really interesting stuff that is being put out nowadays.

Yeah post rock has lot of tremolo pickingz! And many many orchestra kinda stuff like choirs and shitzz. It's da bomb.
