The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread

i think its hard to think that way since they're mostly epl players which is one of the top leagues.
hence they tend to think they're great and they carry that mentality with them in the world cup.

I understood the sentiments amongst the French players pretty well. They showed that being world champions is probably as not as important, compared to team unity - on certain issues - They probably know that their mullahs came from ther respective clubs& so playing for their country is more about pride, which is exactly what they displayed, their pride of sticking together as one.

They'll be jeered, ridiculed etc but it won't matter, they will still draw a crowd when they head back to their clubs to play. I still think that Ireland deserved a spot in the World Cup& they would've performed better for different reasons than of the French.

As for the ball, I'm sure they had a protoype where certain players were given the chance to have a knock about& so the feedback must've been a little negative yet it ended up being used. That's puzzling.

The English League are one of the top leagues in the world& that fame stems from the fact that the British Empire used to colonize a lot of countries. Hence English -as with Spanish&French- became one of most spoken languages.

Most of us grew up on a diet of English footy due to historical 'ties'. That is why most of us will always say or feel that the English League is the best - subjective - The Americans, had soccer became the major sport there, I am sure, most of the world's view would differ.

The big money that went into English footy would've instead gone into American soccer& we would have teams like the New York Cosmos - which incidentally one of my fav players Pele had a stint with -being household names here. Americans like impact sports like Gridiron,Wrestling etc &sports that represent their historical past like baseball etc.

I did grow up on English footy& some of my fav players came from the late70s&early 80s from clubs like Liverpool then, to Stoke City& Wolves. Back then the money wasn't as big as now& you had more UK based players compared to now but I also took time to watch the Bundesliga& especially the South American leagues. The English team are overrated& overhyped not totally of their own doing but as the result of big money corporations.

England has never been a favorite of mine when it comes to certain competitions like the World Cup because it's on that stage that they will meet other Nations, whose players may not be getting big salaries but these folks play 'real' football. Imagine you get paid a zillion pounds, you play in the world cup, you get an unfortunate knock on your knee.. that could mean the end of your rich career.

That potential hazard will linger on your mind because there will be outside influence who will remind you.

When it comes to big stage competitions, the team to look out for are not the ones made up of 22 brilliant individual players but the team that's made up of ONE unified unit. Denmark had a 'emergency backdoor' entry to one fo the Euro Championships, they took their ooportunity& went on to become Champs.

I agree, everytime before I watched an England game, I just have an enormous excitement and hype about them, but in reality not even one game of England could excite me (maybe except for 2002 world cup), then I realised england league is great, not the england team, I carried that hype over. England team "without the media" can be devastating, I mean without too much coverage of EPL can do good for England team, but it will never happen.

Sometimes being an underdog can have its advantages, with no extra pressure around you. Look at Greece, did anyone give them a freaking chance, I think everyone would have thought they got more chance getting hit by a car than them (Greece) defying God's wrath. They are exactly like their Greek myth, Perceuis against a gigantic Cracken.

..'Kraken' was a good band as well hehe :-)

Actually i believe it was the English press that installed them as favourites (typical). I don't really think that the team themselves are really THAT arrogant. We all know how the english press LOVES to 'quote' players and sources. Yeah they do suck worse than the other teams but make no mistake they do have quality in the side.

Thus far, the 4 groups that has South Americans...
have the South American teams leading.

Groups A&B are foregone conclusions, hope it stays the same for groups F&H.

Woohoo Germany vs England next round...riot police get your gear on babyyy!!!

Heh another crap team in Italy crashed out. Wadda joke, the 2 teams in the last WC final are now out at the group stages. I only have 1 word for them: PHAIL. Too bad for New Zealand though, they're actually unbeaten in the tournament!

Wow now Japan, who were written off at the start of the tournament, have beaten Denmark 3-1! 2 great freekicks from Keisuke Honda and Yasuhito Endo plus a tap in sealed the win for Japan. They are the 2nd Asian nation to qualify for the knockout stages after South Korea. Wow, Asia actually did better than Africa!
