The Gender Issue

Which is one reason why i don't really like trying guitars/basses in stores. Puts a lot more pressure if you're a girl. Really. And cause most girls are pretty much self conscious. Duh!

Same same. :(
I just don't know why I can't (not that I don't want) try out guitars in stores.

D: i havent tried to test out basses in stores. =_= they look at me like i cannot play the thing like that. hahaha. i scared they talk talk and say i action wana try the bass. LOL

Don't worry dear. By the time we have enough money to get you a new one, you'll be good enough to show off abit while trying out the bass. We'd probably be jamming with each other while buying guitars. LOL

I get that fear too, but just wing it la. Usually I just pluck a few notes, strum some C or G chord and pretend I really dunno how to play a guitar properly lol. I guess the gender issue can be useful at times... pretend to be a noob and the guys probably won't care as much so you can get away with it.

Trust me, that doesn't happen to just girls. LOL,theres no gender issues involved in the question of "What should I play to not get weird looks from the people around me while I test this guitar?"

I've been reading post about female musicians and stuff and people asking about if they are good, awesome what so ever.

WHATS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE!!
It don't matter what gender people are
You may be a transvestite for all I care
But as long as you can play the god damn instrument
You are good
Just because you don't hear or see too many female guitarist or drummers or bassist or whatever, you judge their credibility.
Gender don't matter

Is there still people out there who think gender is an issue
Come right up!

Ouh,by the way
I'm a guy!
Straight by the way
HEES ^_^

Im a bassist and guitarist and i think i play alright.
people always go like, ''whaaaa-? YOU PLAY BASS?''
lovelovelovelove off, kids. anyone can play the damn instrument .
gender doesnt matter.
what, so just cos you are male so you have longer, stronger fingers and better ears? and can play better? i just descibed a monkey.
equality rocks.
AND im female. so... im just defending myself. getting tired of'' you play bass? thats for guys''
kinda shit.
xx

HAHA, agree. Even though I myself don't have that mentality, I've seen it a lot and i am not too happy about the discrimination. Its always about the player, not the instrument, not the looks and surely never the gender. People still have their prejudices and stuff. SHEESH. I long for a day where I can have a guitar battle with a great female guitarist

yar i agree about the testing out guitars at stores bit. :b but i think both genders probably feel the same way at some point.

anyway, i think it'll be cool if female musicians gathered together to have a jam session or something. :]

I would really admire any female guitarist/musician even if she picked up lets say a fender strat and started strumming a few chords.

Most people i know give up when they realise they have to have commitment/financial stability/effort in practice..

Honestly ive really nvr seen any female musician arnd my age ( im 17 tis year btw ) play an electric or bass, and trust me i would really take my hat off to any one if i had the chance to see one.

:D Gender doesnt matter. Its all in the commitment.

i know a lot of girls who play better than me ! hahahaha and I've never seen gender as an issue .

oh my goodness! I am so happy i finally found some serious female guitarists here!! :-D
although i am partial to shopping and eyelashes, im serious when it comes to playing the guitar and i find it damn annoying when they don't take you seriously when you ask to try out a guitar at the shop. I remember once I got so offended when i was buying an amp and they asked me if it was for my male friend who was with me at that time. And he cant play to save his life!! =/
damn chauvinists.

guitar battles are stupid they only exist in guitar freaks and guitar heroes. How do you use real guitar to guitar battle? see who plays faster wins? see who's phrasing better win? how do u all actually win the other people? I thought playing guitar is all about making music not winning people, diff ppl diff style that's the beauty of it each person is unique

I'm guilty of poking fun at female musicians because they are female. All in good fun though, I enjoy seeing people over-reacting, not really about being a chauvinist but it's about schadenfreude.

Schadenfreude ist die schönste freude!

girlpants, esape artist, vicomaniac etc are great guitarist & young & nubile too

vicomaniac?
i assume you mean me la hor :P

im not a great guitarist hahahha.. but i'll take the fact that you actually mentioned me as a compliment, fgl ;)

i think the gender issue has been blown far out of proportion by both sides.
i strongly believe that girls if compared to guys who have played for the same amount of time, have the ability to be more proficient in guitar.

however, looking around here, in singapore at least, the ratio of girl to guy guitarists are probably.. 1:8?

considering the far lesser amount of girls to guys.. people are usually in awe when they see a girl guitarist that can rock their socks off.
and when they see a girl guitarist that sucks.. "ya la of course ma girl how to play guitar?"

the gender issue = statistics and probability
