THE FOOTBALL THREAD Vol 2

HEY ITS sevilla 3 AFC 1 ..played in Spain and AFC fielded reserves...

credit to sevilla though, they did something no other team could do and that is to beat AFC for the 1st time since April this year....

i don't believe in clubs fielding wholesale reserve teams... it's bad for morale. even though the game was a dead rubber, clubs should be professional and win every match. for the people who stayed up at 3am to watch their team lol

i dont understand this....

wenger that time disagreed with platini over putting less established euro clubs in the champions league coz it devalues the league

the same wenger here now put reserves in his team against sevilla

ironic......

^^ YOU ARE A GOOD MAN

Alex Hleb and Mathieu Flamini have been ruled out of the trip to Newcastle on Wednesday.

The Arsenal squad left for Tyneside on Tuesday without FOUR international midfielders. Cesc Fabregas and Abou Diaby missed the 2-1 win at Aston Villa on Saturday with hamstring and back injuries respectively. They will not be returning at St James’ Park.

And during that morale-boosting victory in Birmingham, Hleb collected a hamstring problem while Flamini fell victim to a recurrence of his thigh injury. Arsène Wenger will bolster his midfield by adding Denilson to his squad. He also has options in Lassana Diarra and Gilberto. However striker Robin Van Persie (knee) is still a couple of weeks away from a return.

“We have lost Alex Hleb and Mathieu Flamini from Saturday at Villa,” Wenger told Arsenal TV Online on Tuesday afternoon. “We have no-one back so that's Diaby, Van Persie, Hleb, Flamini and Fabregas out for this game.

“At one stage we thought it was congested in midfield but now it looks bare,” he joked. “But we still have quality players coming in there. We have Gilberto while Denilson is back after an injury. He is travelling with us. So we are very confident that we are still strong in the midfield.”

Hleb and Fabregas are unlikely to be back for Arsenal’s return to the North-East on Sunday at Middlesbrough however there is more optimism over the chances of Flamini playing at the Riverside Stadium

Arsenal stars to give a day's pay to TreeHouse
Arsenal v Chelsea

Sun, Dec 16, 2007, 4pm

On Sunday December 16th, at Arsenal’s Premier League match against Chelsea, for the first time ever, Arsenal players, directors and staff will unite to participate in ‘Be a Gooner. Be a Giver.’ and the Club is calling upon all supporters to get involved in the charitable initiative to raise much needed funds for its charity of the season, TreeHouse — the national charity for autism education.

The Arsenal squad has already committed to donating a day’s pay to ‘Be a Gooner. Be a Giver.’ as have the Club’s directors and many of its staff. However, the purpose of ‘Be a Gooner. Be a Giver.’ is for everyone associated with the Club to make a contribution, no matter how small, to help reach the £250,000 target to fund dedicated sports facilities at the TreeHouse school in north London.

Virginia Bovell parent and founder of TreeHouse said: “We are thrilled that Arsenal has dedicated a matchday to TreeHouse and especially delighted that they have set up ‘Be a Gooner. Be a Giver.’ People at the Club are so genuine about helping, their support is not just tokenism.

“It would be wonderful if all those affiliated to Arsenal, affiliate themselves to TreeHouse for this initiative as it would significantly help us towards reaching the £250,000 target which is what we need to build a new sports facility that will not only to be used by the school but also children in the local area.”

Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger declared: “The work of TreeHouse is absolutely amazing. I have seen first-hand the dedication these people show in helping kids with autism improve their lives and the lives of their families. Education is important to all of us and the progress that the pupils of TreeHouse school have made is nothing short of remarkable. That is why we are taking part in ‘Be a Gooner. Be a Giver’. The Arsenal family is a large one and if everyone just pledges something, I am confident that we will reach our £250,000 target needed to provide them with a permanent sports facility.”

Arsenal Captain William Gallas is also backing the initiative: “Cesc and I went along to TreeHouse recently and it was a humbling, yet fun-filled experience. The interaction with the kids was fantastic and the dedication of the teachers was second to none. We also really enjoyed taking part in the feet painting activity!”

“We are united on the pitch and we are united off it. We are all getting involved in the ‘Be a Gooner, Be a Giver.’ campaign because we don't want to just talk about helping TreeHouse, we want to make a real difference. I hope that the fans can also make a small donation so it will be a real team effort.”

‘Be a Gooner. Be a Giver.’ forms part of a dedicated matchday for TreeHouse which will take place on Sunday, December 16th against Chelsea. It will primarily focus on raising awareness and funds for the charity. Activities include 50p from every programme sold going to the charity and advertising around Emirates Stadium.

Newcastle United1Taylor 60

Arsenal1Adebayor 4

Arsenal are four points clear at the top of the Premier League, but the gap could and perhaps should be more.

A stunning volley from Emmanuel Adebayor gave the visitors the lead after just three minutes at St. James' Park. The omens looked good - Arsenal had won 18 of the last 20 games he had scored in - but Newcastle stormed back.

The league leaders seemed to have taken the sting out of their hosts' reposte but Eduardo gave the ball away just before the hour mark and Steven Taylor's low shot beat Manuel Almunia.

Both sides had chances to win the game but Arsenal had to settle for a point from the second of three away trips in the space of eight days. They head back to the North East on Sunday to face Middlesbrough.

Arsene Wenger made two changes from the side which lined up against Aston Villa, both of them forced by injuries. Gilberto replaced Mathieu Flamini (thigh) in the centre of midfield and Eduardo stepped in for Alex Hleb (hamstring), operating just behind Adebayor. Cesc Fabregas, Abou Diaby and Robin van Persie are still working their way back to fitness.

Newcastle, without the injured Michael Owen, were winless in five and, if you believe the press, just one defeat away from parting company with their manager. If that was the case, Sam Allardyce looked doomed after just three minutes.

That's how long it took Adebayor to crash in his ninth goal of a stellar season. The Togolese striker leapt high to meet Lassana Diarra's right-wing cross with his chest and, as two defenders closed in, fired a volley into the roof of the net.

It was the perfect start for the league leaders but they were soon on the back foot. Newcastle responded well and almost equalised in an instant, Geremi getting above Kolo Toure to loop a header beyond Manuel Almunia but inches past the post.

The home side's front pairing of Alan Smith and Obafemi Martins occupied Toure and William Gallas while Arsenal's full backs were pushed back by the industry of James Milner and Habib Beye. But Newcastle's surge petered out and the visitors took control.

Tomas Rosicky, cutting in from the left, Eduardo, picking up loose balls from deep and Adebayor, leading the line wonderfully well, threatened to carve Newcastle open while Diarra continued to impress in midfield.

It was the Frenchman who set up Arsenal's next decent chance after 17 minutes. Tenaciously charging through two challenges, Diarra picked out Adebayor in the left channel. The striker failed to spot Eduardo's run into the box but glided past a defender and forced Shay Given to save from a narrow angle. Rosicky's corner kick flicked off the head of a defender and landed at Gilberto's feet eight yards out, but the Brazilian was unable to wrap his foot around the ball and skewed his shot.

Back came Newcastle. Geremi's low free kick found a way through Arsenal's way in the 27th minute but Almunia plunged to his left and clung on to the ball with Smith lurking.

The Spanish keeper and his defenders were kept under pressure by a series of teasing deliveries from the flank. Charles N'Zogbia's cross just eluded David Rozehnal and Nicky Butt, then Steven Taylor's header from N'Zogbia's cross was tipped towards the post by Almunia before Gael Clichy completed the clearance.

Almunia made another good claim under severe pressure from Taylor from a Geremi cross, then Toure hacked away as the Cameroonian tested Arsenal again from the right flank. Newcastle finished the first half strongly and had the first chance of the second half, N'Zogbia getting everything behind a shot from 25 yards. Fortunately, Almunia got everything behind the save.

You sensed a second Arsenal goal would finish off a Newcastle side clearly lacking confidence, and they had their chances. Four minutes after the break Rosicky skipped away from a challenge, opted not to try his luck and instead found Eboue on the right. The Ivorian hammered in a first-time shot from a narrow angle but it went straight at Given. Then Rosicky burst clear from the halfway line after a slip-up in the Newcastle midfield but Rozehnal raced back to dispossess the Czech.

The home side had gone into its shell but Arsenal got sloppy, giving the ball away too cheaply and encouraging Newcastle to regain the initiative. They did so. Milner twisted and turned inside the box before forcing a good save from Almunia, stretching to claim the winger's low cross.

Arsenal got away with it on that occasion but they were punished just before the hour mark for relinquishing possession again. This time Eduardo lost the ball on the left as the visitors looked to counter-attack after a corner. Geremi crossed, Smith flicked on and, when the ball eluded Sagna and Martins, Taylor span to fire a shot in off the post.

Newcastle roared forward but, woken up by the equaliser, Arsenal regained a semblance of control. Nicklas Bendtner replaced the tiring Eduardo and provided more bulk to the visitors' attack. One poor touch denied the Dane a good chance 20 yards out while Rosicky's low centre from Eboue's deep right-wing delivery was almost turned in.

Adebayor had claims for a penalty turned down after he exchanged passes with Rosicky and surged into the box, but the referee waved them away. Then Newcastle almost snatched it a minute from time when a Eboue cleared after a scramble in the Arsenal area.
