Johan Djourou feels like he is starting his Arsenal career afresh this season.
The Swiss centre back completed only one game under Arsène Wenger last season. He was on loan at Birmingham until January and then picked up an unfortunate injury in his comeback game against Tottenham at Emirates Stadium. He returned as a substitute at Derby in May and played an entire 90 minutes at Sunderland in the final outing of last season.
It was a difficult campaign and a blip in an otherwise smooth rise to prominence at Arsenal. Johan went to an elite Swiss football academy and made his professional debut for Etoile Carouge before signing for Arsène Wenger in 2003.
He started as a central midfielder but has emerged as a classy, ball-playing centre back. His passing and anticipation are also major assets.
Johan made 27 starts for Arsenal in 2006/07 and won plaudits at St Andrews. He also went to Euro 2008 but failed to feature. However now he is back at Emirates Stadium, Johan is looking to kick on.
MY YEAR

May

Johan played 90 minutes in the first two May fixtures but was back on the bench in the third. He was completely omitted from the squad which travelled to Old Trafford in the Premier League on Sunday, May 16 but returned to the substitutes bench for the final game of the season.
April

After featuring in the month’s first three fixtures, including a start against Wigan on April 11, Johan suffered a knee injury that would keep him out of the subsequent three fixtures. But the Swiss defender was back on the bench against Boro on April 26 and also included in the squad for the Champions League Semi-Final first leg against Man United three days later.
March

Johan played 90 minutes against West Brom, Burnley, Hull, and Blackburn and was included among the subs in the other two March fixtures. As ever, the Swiss defender looked classy at the heart of Arsenal’s defence alongside Kolo Toure or William Gallas. At the start of March, Johan spoke to the Official Matchday Programme about being ‘ready’. "I am trying to take my chance," he said. "I told myself at the start of the season that I have to work hard even if I’m not first choice because I’m still young, but I think I’ve shown to people that I’m ready for this.”

Lukasz is now the established No 2 keeper behind Manuel Almunia. He came to Arsenal in the summer of 2007 from Legia Warsaw and, as usual under Arsène Wenger, was given his first outings in the Carling Cup.
He had excellent games against Newcastle, Sheffield United and Blackburn as the youngsters marched into the Semi-Finals. His handling was secure, his decision-making assured and he was calm under pressure.
Wenger was obviously impressed as gave him further experience in the final three Premier League games of the campaign.
Lukasz is still young but he already has pedigree. He won the Polish League at Legia in 2005/06 and was voted the best keeper in the ‘Ekstraklasa’ for both 2006 and 2007.
He is an established part of the national set-up and was selected for the squad at Germany 2006 and Euro 2008.
MY YEAR

May

Once again Lukasz profited from Manuel Almunia’s ankle injury in the month of May. The Pole kept goal in Arsenal’s 3-0 victory at Portsmouth, their 4-1 defeat at home to Chelsea, then their goalless draw at Old Trafford. However, an knee injury kept the 24-year-old out of the season’s final fixture.
April

An injury to Manuel Almunia ensured that April was a very busy month for Lukasz. The Polish keeper came on after 27 minutes of Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Villarreal and kept his place between the sticks until April 26. His undoubted lowlight of the month came on April 18, incidentally his 24th birthday, when his misjudgement allowed Didier Drogba to round him and tuck in Chelsea’s winner in the FA Cup Semi-Final. In an interview with Arsenal TV Online on April 24, the keeper described the moment as his “lowest point”.
March

With FA Cup Quarter and Semi Finals in March, ‘Cup keeper’ Lukasz enjoyed quite a busy month. After a fine clean sheet against Burnley on Sunday 8th, he was beaten by a deflected Nicky Barmby effort nine days later in Arsenal’s 2-1 win against Hull.

It is incredible to think that 2007/08 was Gael’s first full season as Arsenal’s No 1 left back. Two terms ago, the Frenchman had missed the start of the campaign with another injury.
They plagued his early Arsenal career so it is no wonder Arsène Wenger said Clichy’s main achievement last season was completing so many games. However he did much, much more than that.
Gael was one of the most consistent performers showing pace, tenacity and the desire to get forward as much as possible.
It is no surprise he was the runner-up for the Player of the Season award.
Clichy had barely played for Cannes before he was spotted by Wenger’s scouting network. He shadowed Ashley Cole for a couple of seasons and became the youngest player to win a Premiership medal in 2004 at the age of 18.
Now 23, Clichy is already one of the mainstays of Wenger’s side.
MY YEAR

May

On Thursday, May 7, Arsene Wenger said: “The season is finished [for Gael]. We would have put a little pressure on the recovery period had we gone to the Champions League Final. But now we will not take a gamble.” And so it proved – the Frenchman did not appear in May.
April

Gael started April with 90 minutes against Manchester City and Villarreal but suffered a back injury in Spain. In the end, the problem kept the fleet-footed Frenchman out of the month’s remaining fixtures.
March

Gael played every minute of Arsenal’s games outside the FA Cup in March. As ever the Frenchman was in dependable form on the left of the Gunners’ defence. On Friday, March 8, Gael spoke about playing under Arsène Wenger. “When I heard Arsenal wanted to sign me, the most important thing was that the boss was here and that he'd be here for many years to come,” said Clichy. “Arsenal are his club. If he has to move on he will but it's not a concern, as players we just have to keep focused on the performance on the pitch.”

Arshavin, 27, who played a key part in Zenit’s UEFA Cup winning campaign last season, was also a member of the Russian EURO 2008 squad in which he scored two goals from his three appearances, earning him a place in the ‘Team of the Tournament’.
Arshavin won the Russian Premier League with Zenit in 2007, making a total of 232 appearances for his previous club, scoring 51 goals. During his time with Zenit, he was also part of the winning team that picked up the Russian Super Cup in 2008, the Russian Premier League Cup in 2003 and featured in the UEFA Super Cup victory over Manchester United in Monaco last August.
With 41 international caps for Russia, Arshavin has scored a total of 15 goals for his country. His versatility has allowed him to play in a variety of positions; the 2006 Russian Footballer of the Year started his career as a right midfielder, but has since played as an attacking midfielder and more recently has filled the ‘second striker’s’ role.

MY YEAR

May

Andrey started three of May’s five fixtures primarily as a second striker to Robin van Persie. The Russian didn’t manage a goal in the month but did wade in with a couple of assists in Arsenal’s victory over Portsmouth on Saturday, May 2.
April

Andrey enjoyed yet another incredible month in Arsenal’s red-and-white during April. Of course, the Russian sat out Arsenal’s Champions League ties because of ineligibility but he started in all four of April’s Premier League matches. On April 21, Andrey plundered an incredible four-goal haul at Anfield in the Gunners’ 4-4 draw against Liverpool. In doing so, he became only the 10th Arsenal player to score four or more away from home.
March

It didn’t take long for Andrey to make his mark on North London. After sparkling displays against West Brom and Burnley, the Russian opened his goalscoring account against Blackburn, dancing along the byline before lifting an effort into the roof of the net from an impossible angle. After the game, Arsène Wenger revealed that the midfielder had four stitches in his foot at half time. “There was no question about him playing in the second half,” said Wenger. “He is not a soft boy at all. He is never in the medical room, he is not that type. He is tough. He has won things before and he has experience - we are very, very young.”

At the start of the 2008/09 season, Vito had not made his first-team debut for Arsenal - but he had already shown he has plenty of promise.
Signed from Atalanta in July 2005, the Italian has worked his way through the ranks and began the current campaign as the third-choice keeper behind Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski.
Last season he was on the bench for a handful of first-team games but never tasted the action.
He did appear in 13 Reserves games and made a notable penalty save in the final minute at Reading to preserve a 1-1 draw.
Vito played four games on loan at Barnsley in 2006/07. It is his only first-team action of any sort so far. But that may change this term.

‘Ade’ enjoyed his best season as a professional footballer in 2007/8. He hit 30 goals in 48 appearances and carried the attack while Robin van Persie and Eduardo were injured.
The Togolese targetman has every attribute - pace, skill, strength and aerial ability - plus a tremendous work-rate. There were many great goals to choose from but the stand-out strikes were the volleys at Tottenham and Newcastle.
However Emmanuel is not only spectacular but consistent as well. Between last December and early February he scored in nine consecutive games for Arsenal, hitting the net 12 times in total. Just after that run he also ended an odd anomaly of not having scored in the Champions League. That goal came in the final seconds at Milan.
That was another example of Emmanuel’s handy knack of scoring big goals in big games. But then we could have predicted that after he notched just 21 minutes into his debut in January 2006 after moving from Monaco.
He received a Champions League runners-up medal in 2004 with the French side but started his career as a 17-year-old with Metz. Emmanuel has twice been nominated as African Footballer of the Year and his 11 goals for Togo in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup was the best on his continent.
He finished third in Arsenal.com's Player of the Season poll last term.

The 2007/08 season saw Nicklas finally begin his first-team career at Arsenal.
The tall Danish striker had been rising through the ranks since moving from Copenhagen in 2004. He spent a year on loan at Birmingham but returned last season to push his claims for a starting berth.
A record of 17 starts, 23 substitute appearances and nine goals represents a fine start.
Nicklas is big but has a deft touch on the floor. He has the ability to link midfield and attack with intelligence then finish of the move with precision.
Perhaps his most important goals last season came in the air. He powered home the winner against Tottenham with his first touch in a North London derby. Nicklas also nodded in crucial goals against Newcastle and Aston Villa.
He is also becoming a major part of the Danish set-up. At the start of this season Nicklas already had eight caps.

In his first couple of seasons at Arsenal, Emmanuel was a raiding right back. However last term the Ivorian became a fully-fledged right midfielder.
Having Bacary Sagna behind him, Emmanuel has full licence to go forward but his defensive heritage allows him to cover back when required.
Emmanuel’s primary aim these days is to add balance to the Arsenal attack. He regularly finds the byline and is arguably the best crosser in Arsène Wenger’s squad.
The African Nations Cup helped to restrict him to 36 appearances last term. Surprisingly he did not find the net but he did hit the woodwork twice in the Champions League tie with Slavia Prague at Emirates Stadium.
Emmanuel signed for Arsenal from Beveren in January 2005 and, within 16 months, was starting in the Champions League Final against Barcelona.
Along with Kolo Toure, he is a regular for the Ivory Coast.

The French left back made a significant step forward last season by making his first starts in the Premier League and Champions League.
Before then the defender had been a part of Arsène Wenger’s squad and a Carling Cup regular but full games against Sevilla and Steaua Bucharest early in the campaign suggested that Wenger wanted to test him further.
Armand has all the attributes to be a excellent defender in the modern game. He is powerfully built, fast and attack-minded. Perhaps he still needs to learn the craft of the position but experience can not be learned on the training pitch, only matches can give it to you and Armand is becoming more and more involved. This season he will gain valuable experience while on loan at Portsmouth.
Signed from Monaco in 2006, he has represented France at Under-17, Under-18s and Under-19 level.
He began last season by scoring a spectacular 40-yarder against Fulham in the Reserves and ended it by supplying a pin-point cross for Nicklas Bendtner the score the winner against Everton in the final home game of the campaign.

Kieran made his first team debut for the Gunners last season, as a left-back in the Carling Cup win over Sheffield United.
Kieran first shot to prominence in the FA Youth Cup run to the semi-final in 2007, grabbing a goal in both legs of the last four defeat to Manchester United. He usually operates in either central midfield or wide on the left, but impressed again at left-back in this pre-season’s Emirates Cup game against Juventus.
As well as playing in the Carling Cup, Kieran made 10 appearances for the Reserve Team last season, scoring twice. In January he joined Championship side Norwich City on loan, where he made seven appearances. He returned all the better for it, scoring on his return to Reserves duty.
Like team-mates James Dunne and Abu Ogogo, Kieran was at Wimbledon but joined Arsenal when their academy disbanded and became Milton Keynes Dons.

MY YEAR

May

Kieran missed the month’s first fixture against Portsmouth but returned to start all four of May’s remaining games. The youngster made a costly slip in Arsenal’s Champions League Semi-Final defeat against Manchester United but received words of support from a lot of his squad-mates. Kolo Toure said: “A mistake can happen to anybody, it can happen to the best players. I think he has been outstanding this season when he has come in and he has played great, great football for us.”
April

Gael Clichy’s back injury meant that April was something of a breakthrough month for Kieran. The youngster played 90 minutes in the last six fixtures of the month, including the FA Cup Semi-Final at Wembley on Saturday 18. On April 22, Under-18s manager Steve Bould paid tribute to Kieran’s progress. I think Kieran’s progression is an inspiration for each and every one of our kids to see the level that he has reached,” Bould told Arsenal.com. “It gives all of us at the Academy hope – staff included.”

Tomas Rosicky pulled on an Arsenal shirt for the first time in 18 months as his team kicked off their pre-season programme with a draw at Barnet.

The Czech international hobbled off during an FA Cup tie against Newcastle on January 26, 2008 and has overcome plenty of obstacles on his long road back to fitness. The 45 minutes he got under his belt at Underhill was the best news of the day.

The result wasn’t so heartwarming - although that hardly matters at this time of the year.

Sanchez Watt set up Andrey Arshavin for the opening goal three minutes before the break but Ismail Yakubu headed an equaliser on the stroke of half-time. Nacer Barazite, one of 10 half-time substitutes, restored Arsenal’s lead in spectacular fashion but Elliott Charles struck with eight minutes left to earn Barnet a creditable draw.

Rosicky’s return was the big news before kick-off but he was not the only mouth-watering name in the Arsenal line-up. New signing Thomas Vermaelen made his debut, William Gallas returned from his own lengthy lay-off and Arshavin also started.

There was plenty for a packed Underhill to savour in the July sunshine.

This trip to Barnet has been a staple of Arsenal’s pre-season diet for the past decade and it gives Wenger’s side the opportunity to shake off some summer cobwebs before the hard work starts at their training camp in Austria.

Arsenal, sporting their new blue away kit, started briskly. Arshavin dragged a shot past the near post inside 90 seconds and then forced Will Viner into a save from the acutest of angles. Watt tried to snaffle the rebound but his effort was blocked.

Rosicky, captain for the day, was heavily involved in the opening exchanges and, needless to say, his first touch was greeted with a huge roar. Most of the 5,099 crowd craved a goal from the Czech and were almost sated when Arshavin slipped Rosicky in with a deft pass inside the box. Viner rushed out to smother.

The Barnet keeper was by far the busier.

After eight minutes Rosicky found Wilshere on the left and the 17-year-old whipped a ball across to Watt. His first touch took him inside his marker but Viner pushed away the striker’s fierce effort.

After a frenetic first 15 minutes, the pace eased off – hardly surprising given the time of year.

Barnet, full of endeavour, started to compete. Yannick Bolasie, quick and tricky, was their most fruitful outlet.

Paul Furlong, 40, was his very senior partner up front but the former Chelsea striker gave Vermaelen a good battle. The Dutchman won’t meet a more experienced opponent this season and he stood up well to his first test in English football. Strong in the air, composed on the ball – Vermaelen looks the part.

The chances dried up as the tempo dropped but, having regained their breath, Arsenal stepped up a gear towards the end of the half.

Watt emerged from two sliding challenges to release Wilshere on the left six minutes before the break. He cut inside and waited for support before finding Arshavin. The Russian teed up Rosicky but his left-foot strike flew wide.

Three minutes later, Arsenal were ahead.

This time Watt raced down the left and he cleverly delayed his cross before putting the ball on a plate for Arshavin at the far post. The Russian finished high into the net from close range.

You might not have fancied Barnet to bounce back from that but they conjured up an equaliser with the last touch of the half. Danny Hart whipped in an inviting free-kick from the left and centre-back Yakubu climbed highest to power a header beyond Manuel Almunia.

As expected it was all-change at half-time – with the exception of Vermaelen.

He stayed on for the second half and was joined by 10 new players: Craig Eastmond, Luke Ayling, Jay Simpson, Barazite, Thomas Cruise, Gilles Sunu, Francis Coquelin, Conor Henderson and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas. Early evidence that Wenger is already building a team around his new signing!

It took just four minutes for Arsenal to regain the lead and they did it in some style.

Barazite, back from a season-long loan at Derby, was forced away from the penalty area by a crowded Barnet defence but found space to arrow a shot into the top corner from 20 yards. Remarkably it was the third year in succession that Barazite has scored in this fixture.

Emmanuel-Thomas clipped a free-kick just over as the young Gunners asserted themselves but, once again, a frantic opening spell was followed by a more mundane passage of play.

Hart raised the temperature with a thumping shot from 25 yards which stung Mannone’s hands and Arsenal responded in kind as Emmanuel-Thomas played in Simpson, but .his goal-bound effort was blocked.

Arsenal looked in control but they were pegged back again with eight minutes left when Charles popped up inside the box to find Mannone’s bottom corner.

Emmanuel-Thomas squandered a chance for an instant riposte when he slid the ball just wide after breaking clear of the Barnet back line.
And so Arsenal had to settle for a draw, but that was not the story today. Welcome back, Tomas Rosicky.

Man City sign Arsenal striker Adebayor

AFP - Monday, July 20
MANCHESTER, England (AFP) - - Manchester City have clinched the 25 million pound (35 million euros) signing of Togolese forward Emmanuel Adebayor from Arsenal on a five-year contract.

The 25-year-old Adebayor completed his medical test at Eastlands to become the latest big-money new face at City, after the recent captures of midfielder Gareth Barry and strikers Carlos Tevez and Roque Santa Cruz.
Hundreds of City fans greeted Adebayor, who said: "It made me feel really welcome and special and I can't wait to play for City's fans and show them what I can do.
"I was born to play football and that is what I want to do. I have come here to make history for this club and those supporters," he told reporters.
"It is what the chairman and the manager told me that they want too and I can't wait to get started."
City coach Mark Hughes waxed lyrical about the forward, whom Arsene Wenger brought to Arsenal for just five million euros from Monaco in 2006.
"Emmanuel has been one of the top forwards in the Premier League since he arrived from France and we are delighted he has agreed to come and join us," Hughes told club website www.mcfc.co.uk.
"Along with the other signings we have made in the last two windows he will greatly enhance our ability to compete with the top sides.
"His arrival is another clear indication that we are determined to augment the players we have here with the best of international talent.
"He adds vital balance and power to our attack. He has everything a top forward needs. He is versatile, powerful, quick and agile on the ball.
"He will definitely add a new dimension to our play. I have been a great admirer for a long time."

THAT'S A
GBP 20 MIL PROFIT !
