Euro Soccer 2008 / UEFA Cup – Tales Of The Unexpected

Euro Soccer 2008 / UEFA Cup – Tales Of The Unexpected

Looks like its an ‘Underdog’s’ game…

I was disappointed with Croatia loosing out on penalties to Turkey. I felt that Croatia had played better. And I guess like most spectators, I was confident when Croatia scored in the 119th minute….I bet many Turkish Supporters did switch off the TV by then…and then Ka-Pow! Another One Bites The Dust…Turkey had to score an equalizer. And the most psychopathic nail-biting moments during any penalty shootouts….that dreadful fear that the best scorers would screw up on penalities. Ai-Ya-Ya-Ya-Ya!!!!! I wouldn’t desire to be in their shoes for those split seconds. And Croatia had to ‘Gobble-Gobble’ away while the Winner Turkey feast upon a Turkish Delight…

The two most exciting games is still Portugal Vs Germany and Netherlands Vs Russia…and though I was for either one of them to get into at least the semi-finals, Germany astounded me again…though I was often ‘tricked’ by Germany’s ‘Slowhanded’ starts in any competition be it The World Cup games…Have they not surprised us by getting into Semi-Finals And Finals in the past?

And The Russians truly astounded me with their attack and ball possession which over-rode The Dutch…It was an equally heart-stopping and heart pounding game like the match between Portugal Vs Germany.
Back in the 80’s, I remembered that Russia was supposedly one of the most aged teams but looks like the opposite had taken place by having a very youthful team now.

I still remember The Goalkeeper back in the 80’s Rinat Daseyev & player Oleg Blokhin.

Andrei Arshavin was memorable in his performance. Like what one of the commentators said that surely a number of players had their ‘Prices’ and ‘Market Worth’ elavated through this Euro 2008 performance.

Well, looks like only Germany is on my side…but I had developed a soft spot for The Russians and it would be nice to see either Germany and Russia get into The Finals Of The Euro Soccer 2008.

Orangina 1 - 3 Vodka

Vodkarians just too strong for the Oranginas. In fact, it should have been more like 5-1 to the Vodkarians if not for some very poor finishing and selfishness on their part.

By far one of the best games of football at international level. Pulsating, and relentless, end-to-end stuff. But the Oranginas just didn't have anymore pulp in them and thus, their juices ran dry by the time extra-time began. The Vodkarians poked and squeezed them, at will, like a cheap pack of over-riped oranges.

Hiddink is indeed Houdini.

After it's all been said, it's still Germany's cup to lose. Better finishers. Physically, on equal to the Turks but with more creativity, clinical finishing and Ballack - the Germans will reach the finals.

Their strongest rivals will be the Vodkarians, if they indeed manage to get that far. All the other teams have weakneses that the Germans will take advantage of.

Great tournament thus far.

Germany!!!!!!!!!!

wow it was always gonna be hard without Arjen Robben, who is in the same class as Messi and C.Ronaldo imo.
Russia were young, quick, incisive and could have wrapped up the game earlier if they were more clinical and did not over-elaborate so much.

I really want to rant about Holland:

1) During the group stage I took France to beat Holland. Ended up France getting trashed 4-1.
2) Then came the final group game: Romania vs Holland. The whole world was saying that Holland would give chance and gift Romania 3 points so as to avoid France/Italy qualifying... And Romania ended up losing 2-0.
3) ok, fine. Then everybody was talking about how Total Football would rule the tournamant. So I took Holland to win Euro2008.
4) I also took Holland to beat Russia. With -1 1/2 goal too.
5) It ended up 1-1 after 90 minutes. I thought: maybe they can win it in ET, or even penalty kicks...

Darn Russians scored twice in ET and I started tearing my Singapore Pools tickets...

It goes to show that some teams lack the form and stamina to continue their good form. It was a pity though, that Holland had to be the casualties, although Russia fully deserved the victory. Hiddink is indeed a magician, imagine what wld happen if he had accepted Abramovich's offer to go to Chelski. He cld win the BPL with Aston Villa! But 1 game is not enough to judge them, we must see how they do against Spain or Italy. My heart says Spain will win but my mind says the Italians will pull through, perhaps on penalties. Wld be fun to watch though, Casillas vs Buffon or even better, Reina vs Buffon in the penalty stakes. I do hope Spain buck the trend though, all the teams that played 2nd string sides in their final group games have all been knocked out. And Schweinsteiger has indicated interest in the BPL, might 1 of the sides make a bid?
