The Bassist's Effects Line Up

is it a problem with the taper?? probably something that can be sorted out with the appropriate mod.

there's also the capitalist pig, it is supposed to be a tamer version of the communist pig.

i'm in the market for a modern sounding fuzz right now 8) i'll probably wait for mxr's offerings to be released

Just got a REDDI not too long ago ;)

I've been really happy with mine, and I've found that it sounds better the more you turn it up. Here are some clips for your reference, if you're on the fence about dropping the dosh for one of these... as usual, excuse the sloppy playing...

This is a P-bass with semi-old DR Hi-Beams, Nordstrand NP4 pickups and Orange Drop caps first straight into my Audio Kontrol, then through the REDDI:

Direct, no REDDI:

REDDI on 5 (or 12nn):

REDDI on 10:

Slap samples (P slap tone may not be for everyone!):

REDDI on 10:

A touch of soft-knee compression added in post (nothing more than 2db), no EQ added. Also, since these things aren't supposed to exist without photos...

Nice. I'm assuming that the reference to 5 & 10 is to some sort of gain level, right?

The REDDI looks huge. Looks like it may be meant more for studio work rather than live playing.

Yup. 5 would be halfway up, 10 is all the way.

It is pretty huge... definitely meant more for recording than live use. However it fits nicely in the space between my Pedaltrain 2 and the hard case it comes in, so it goes into my live rig.

It depends on the kind of music you play I guess- from my perspective, the colouration from my amp (Ampeg, Aguilar etc, even Hartke tube channels) is almost always what I want sent to the mixing desk, but this being Singapore the only place they will mic up your amp is at the Esplanade or Indoor Stadium... most other places they stick you with a Countryman or Whirlwind box and whatever rig you've invested time and money into gets turned into an expensive stage monitor. They do have their reasons which I understand — stage EQ does not always translate well to house EQ, but I still want some sort of warm tube coloration in my sound.

The REDDI helps to alleviate the frustrations I have by sending a warm, valve-coloured sound to the mixing desk, while leaving me to tweak my stage tone to whatever I want it to be. If the FOH engineer can't get a good sound from the DI signal I send him, then that's his fault because 1) I'm sending him a nice hot signal for him to work with that's pre-EQ and 2) I already sound like how I want to on stage. If I get my rig miced up as well, that's a good plus, but at least I know I have a good signal going to the mixing desk no matter the situation. So yes... it's worth the extra $$ to me. Perhaps I could have had the same effect by buying a Dave Hall preamp, but the REDDI works very nicely in the studio (maybe more so than the Dave Hall, I'll never know) as an added bonus.

Of course, if your ideal sound does not involve valve colouration, then the JDI or Countryman would suffice. Maybe an Avalon U5 if you really want something good ;) I would have bought an Aguilar DB900 if they still made them, or a Demeter tube DI if they were readily available in Singapore, but no juice. So I got the REDDI :)

Ok thanks. I must say that from the clips, it does the tube thing pretty well. Not for me I guess. I prefer a less coloured DI. Something more transparent like the JDI.

Which level do you use it at, 5 or 10? I thought that at 10 it sounded a bit compressed.

It is slightly compressed at 10... I used to use it at 5, but after making the samples I think I'll run it at 7 or 8 from now on. The JDI's a good one... I probably would have gotten either that or the Avalon if I wasn't looking for tube DIs.

Great sounding clips, superkicky. Definitely beats the hassle of forcing a fatter, warmer signal from my JDI for certain types of music.

This was taken not long ago during a gig in a secondary school.

Since then i sold the Frantone fuzz, awaiting the wren and cuff pickle pie b.
No longer using the BR-2 and might replace the bassdrive with the polish overdrive.
Dt-10 replaced with the Pitchblack.

hi guys!

just a quick one,.

should i put my echo (dan fab echo) at the last of my chain or the chorus?

looks like this:

bass active--->planetwaves tuner--->hartke bass attack--->nano bassballs--->chorus--->echo

or should I place the echo first before the chorus?

Thanks rottenramone!

We are actually a 3 piece band,. hoping that you could recommend any other shaper/effects that could make my sound fill in some gaps especially when our guitarist is doing solo.

the effects line up I have is the one below:

bass active--->planetwaves tuner--->hartke bass attack--->nano bassballs--->chorus--->echo

we play rock and hardrock (blacksabbath/audioslave) sometimes a few dishwalla music,.

:-)

your guitarist shd be able to fill up the space, just hit the notes straight up on the kickdrum will do it. pedalwise, u cld get an overdrive.
