I saw those! I wanna buy but I think they cost about $45 each right? I know that shop does seem to jack up prices so maybe they could be found cheaper elsewhere...

sorry ah a bit off, but i figured this is the best place to ask my question without starting a new thread.

currently i'm playing a samick lefty, was thinking of changing pickups to change the sound. thing is, is it worth getting the pickups swapped out with say, fralins or nordstrands, or am i just better off getting a better bass?

i dunno.. for a samick, i think its cursed with bad craftsmanship and shoddy woodmanship.. so installing new pups would definitely help, but you won't be using your new pups to the max right? sooner or later you'll wanna get a new bass to install your killer pups with..

so either way, you're gonna get a new bass (know what i mean?) haha

so just decide which one you wanna do first, the bass way, or the pup way.. either way, its better than your current predicament. -)

Okay .. .let's take things into perspective ...

1. Have you gotten your bass a proper setup?

2. Do you over EQ your bass ... you shouldn't, just keep everything flat on your amp and just play around with your volume to get how your bass would sound like if it is just going through a clean preamp with no EQ at all.

2A. If the sound is okay, warm with enough definition ... and you kinda like it ... just stick with it ...

3. If after a proper set up ... after testing out the flat response of your bass in a LIVE setting and it still sound horrible, then you could consider getting a new bass.

Alot of times people don't know how to EQ/take care of their bass or even send it for a proper setup before they start using it. This usually results in poor pickup response and the stock pickups are not pushed to their optimum. Trust me, even with good pickups like Nordstrands, Fralins, MECs etc ... if your bass is not setup properly it'll sound lousy ...

So changing your pickups before going through the list above may not help in your tone at all.

I think you've gotta ask yourself what kind of tone you're looking for, mainly, what genre of music you're playing mainly and you can determine your choice of pickups from there ... each different manufacturer has a unique tone to their own make of pickups which make them popular in the market ... if not everyone would have just stuck to Bartolinis .. =P ...

So i hope that helps you save a few hundred regretful bucks before making a choice and regretting it later ... like how i did .. =P .. hahaha ... feel free to PM and ask questions or just post it here ... be more than willing to help ...

damn you exin, make me sound stupid.. HAHAHA

but seriously, a Samick, how much can you help it? but then again, i do know what you mean because instead of just buying new gear to "improve our sound" we can train ourselves to be responsible buyers of equipment to do whatever's neccessary to apease our own ears..

don't say until like that lah litford .. i'm just trying to help here and hope that people don't make the same mistake as i did ...

yeah ... learning more about your gear can actually help you understand what you want exactly and see if the current gear you have suits you ...

if not we'll just GAS more and more get and miserable ... hahah ... GAS for the correct stuff man .. =P ...

i switched from a Fender Warmoth to a Yamaha BBN5A because i knew what kind of sound i wanted .. both of them actually sounded really very good .. it was very hard to part with my Warmoth but i'm glad to have my Yamaha .. =P .. Yammie rocks!

I want a kind of meaty crunch, like a twangy sound(think Geddy Lee). I dont think its ever been properly set up, in this case the stock pickups could be just a couple of copper wires wrapped around bar magnets. It plays pretty smoothly to me, but it could be that I've gotten used to it over almost 11 months.

I'll try all that you said, exin, then decide on what to do after that. Thanks!

you can acheive that with a nice P-bass ... are you using a P-bass?

Mine's a frankenstein. J bass with a P pickguard that looks wrong. But yes i suppose you could call it a J copy.
