Tension increased.

Hi.

Recently, I changed my string gauge on my strat to .10s. The tension went a lot higher and it is pretty hard to bend on the last few frets. Is there a way to lower the tension or this is what .10s "require"?

Thank you.

Loosen the springs at the back.

?? what has string tension got to do with the trem springs? u loosen the trem springs the yo'll just have a higher float on ur bridge.

Oops my bad. I thought I saw the springs at the bridge.

I cannot lower the action further as it will buzz once it is any lower. In fact, it is buzzing a little now on some strings, just very very minor buzzings.

I have the same exact issue as you...
My strings feel rigid like  grrr...

Juz went to SL and gotten my uncollected package (din collect those stuff after buying guitar)
Going to attempt to setup everything myself... 8)

higher tension is the 'drawback' of switching to heavier gauge. note i said 'drawback' in inverted commmas cos it's not considered a disadvantage to everyone. some ppl like higher tension - esp for rhythm work (got the tight percussive feel, IMO)

so either get used to it or switch back...

I actually like higher action... I personally uses .11

I tried .8 and .9 and they feel soft... does not have the "rock" feel.

Anyway, you still can bend with .11... you just need abit of getting used to it.
Somehow heavier guage sounds better to me... anyway... you can try down tunning to lessen the tension. You can also do a proper setup which will help indirectly... like lower the action and if you are hearing fret buzz, it could be due to a rough fret which can be solve by filing...

anyway good luck.

Yeah I sent for a set up once and the guy told me, if the action goes any lower, it will definitely buzz. Guess I just gotta get used to it. Thanks anyway.

you cant really do much about it. you loosen the trem springs and you'll just loosen the strings, meaning it'll tune down. and ofcourse you get an unbalanced trem. in general thicker gauge will give you a better tone. chords will sound slightly tighter and more percussive. they'll ring nicer too. ease of playing is decreased as your left hand would have to get used to bending, fretting etc. might start hurting initially. when you increase gauge from a lower gauge you cannot lower your action if previously your action was already very low. infact, you might need to incrase your action. also you gota re-adjust the tremolo to be balanced, and ofcourse redo the intonation. and you'll also need to tighten your truss rod. ofcourse all this is worth it cos you'll get better sound :D

drop the tuning

+1 for thicker guage strings and tightness.

NewGuy is absolutely right about the initial difficulty in bending. It may seem like it's crippling at first, but once you get used to it, you'll find anything thinner than .010s, and you won't be able to feel a thing.

My guitar is strung with .011s, and I find them perfectly comfortable. Then again, I'm primarily a bassist......

Stevie Ray Vaughn used .012s. He's got 'em MAN HANDS! 8O

I think he used 0.013s. Pretty crazy if you ask me but heck, he can still bend the hell out of them. The one and only stevie I guess.

Kwerty im using 11-56 i dun think that the tension is considered hard..
u need to set the guitar for set up and getting use thats all..

btw wats the "real" reason that made u change gauge?
thicker stings are better..in many ways bro..
dun give up!

for me, i like 0.10s compared to 0.09s cos the higher tension allows me to use a harder pick attack without the strings feeling floppy

and 0.11s on acoustic guitars for a much fuller tone.

*shrugs*
I use 9s. 10s are uncomfortable on a floating bridge guitar... 10s on a fixed bridge, I actually end up hurting my fingers.

9s all the way... esp on a floyd. IMO, it doesn't make sense to fit anything heavier because it stiffens the floyd so much.
