Tele Hardcase

Dear All

I will be pursuing my university education overseas and am expecting to fly off sometime early next year.

I therefore find myself in need of a hardcase for my beloved MIJ tele, and humbly request for advice on where and how to acquire one.

I have read tales of the seemingly destructive nature of the average luggage handler, and intend to take the necessary measures to avoid any possible damage to my tele.

Any and all comments/advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

My guitar made the transition so many times with no problems. not even a flight case. just an ordinary crappy case. just check it in through fragile. it'll appear on the other side in odd sized luggage. it'll be fine. just beware of the condensation and take your guitar out asap to air.

@AaronSoFat: I will definitely get myself a hardcase. Too precious :p

@CyanideJunkie: Where can I get one? My budget's about $200.

Thanks for all the replies :D

Check out bgwguitars.com, under their accessories section, look for the 'fender cases' category. The price should be $190 if I'm not mistaken...

You can buy this hardcase:

I prefer thickly padded gig bags which is why I'm selling my hardcase.

Thanks to all for their replies.

@CyanideJunkie: I checked out the website. Good stuff, looks very solid. Thankee :)

@ToneJedi & AaronSoFat: I'm assuming flight cases to be of hardier and more durable material compared to hardcases?

Yes, you're right, haha. Anyway, he asked for hardcase not flight case. I don't think it's possible to get a flight case below $200, right?

My gosh dude.. a travelling student with the rest of your barang with a FLIGHT CASE on top of that!?!?! hahah bye bye backbone..

OP: consider the hardcase on bgw or a monocase (also available on bgw)

hmmm flight case has some kind of special valve to maintain pressure and humidity. might be useful. since you're willing to spend 200 top up a bit more. haha

Dear All

Thanks very much for all your replies! You've really given me much to consider and ponder upon.

My tele's of real sentimental value to me as it was the first guitar I got with my own hard-earned, blood soaked money *cough* NS *cough*, so I really appreciate all the help and advice.

+1 to monocase, haha im currently in ns too but mono cases are built like a tank, very shock absorbent... haha i just got mine a few hours ago very happy with it, very solid and heavily padded bag :D

I totally get what you mean! When I was in poly, just before NS, I worked part-time on weekends just to earn some spare cash for my guitar hobby. What MIJ tele is that? Fender or what? Tell us more.....

Here are some ideas for you.....

1) Buy any hard case or flight case, new or used, check it in.
2) Buy mono case from city music or buy fusion bag from ty music, then hand carry your guitar and you check in all your other luggage.
3) Install threaded steel inserts on your neck, remove the neck from the body, now you can put it almost any luggage, when you get there, assemble the neck and body again. Since a tele has a fixed bridge, not a big issue at all.

Personally, I would chose the second idea even when I do have threaded inserts. It's all up to you, all the best.....

@CaboWabo: Looking at the MONO case's webpage has certainly given me pause for thought. Looks nice and hardy :D

@ToneJedi: A brand new 1995 Fender blonde TL-STD. Got it from Sound Alchemy last year during the holiday sales. I think the owners would still remember my indecisiveness / utter n00bness that day lol. I had originally planned to get the Jazzmaster then but decided against it - I'll get it once I've improved my skills considerably enough for me to declare that I'm worthy of the $1k+ price tag on it. It also provides me an incentive to return to S'pore after my studies hehe

I really loved the looks on my mates' faces when I told them I was attached to a 16-year old blonde Japanese XD

nice one with the 16yr old jap blonde haha!!!

anyway it is freaking sturdy...
i would be confident that if someone were to throw it with my strat inside from across the room it would still be undamaged at all, haha as long as it doesn't go out the window all's good
and besides getting a mono locally is pretty cheap considering on their webpage they are priced at 205usd excluding shipping if im not wrong

You prefer a jazzmaster over a tele? Personally, I think you're better off with a tele anyday. I must say that you made a good choice. Just curious, how much did you pay for it? It's 1995 but it has been in the shop till 2010, they must have kept it very well all these years.

This reminds me of my previous tele, which was a used mia 52 reissue, I bought it at a very good price but sold it within a few months because I can't handle vintage frets and 7.25 radius and the body was heavy. Fortunately, I sold at a breakeven price and I gave away my compensated saddles to the more worthy new owner. The 52 reissue was made in 1982 but when I bought it, I was only 21 years old.

After going through so many mia strats, including a self assembled one, I'm still going back to a tele, assembling it myself since I can't find something I really like.....

Tell us more about your tele? What specs? Did you do any mods? You can talk to me about tele/strat mods, I got a few simple ways to improve your tone.

Not sure which website you saw but buying here is surely cheaper than shipping it because mono case is somewhat a bulky item and will add to the shipping cost.

Fusion bags cost a little less than mono case, both are as good, just a matter of personal taste. Check out this video by fusion bags: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yk3q6w747qw

** I don't work in any guitar shop and I don't get paid for recommending fusion bags though I think I should be ;)

@ToneJedi: Well, sort of. I really loved the Jazzmaster's tone (still do). That changed when I tried out the tele :D And yes, the guitar was kept in wonderful condition, I haven't noticed any particularly disfiguring blemishes and stuff. Not to sure if it would be appropriate for me to list out the price here...but it was the last piece available for the sale, so fate may have dealt me some pretty good cards then

As for specs - http://www.fenderjapan.co.jp/tl-std.html

As for mods...well, I'm technically still a beginner so I'll reserve that thought once I've improved enough to warrant an upgrade. Was actually thinking of bareknuckle and lollar pickups though...hmmm

In relation to the original topic, I've decided that I should probably pay City Music a visit this weekend and see how things go from there. I've been offered a pretty good deal from another individual for his well-kept GATOR hardcase (according to the photos), so I certainly have much to deliberate upon.
