Suggestions on traveling with your instrument

Hi guys, how did you guys bring your instruments across countries?
Cos' i'm going to aussie and i'll be bringing my bass with me.

Is it possible to pack it in a gig back and hand-carry it?
don't really trust the guys at the baggage handling section =(.

Most airlines do not allow hand-carry due to the size. The only place it fits is the upright closet, where usually reside in the business class, unfortunately. However, I think some people may have persuaded airlines to let them hand-carry, but I wouldn't count on that. Good padded hard-case, fragile stickers, and really, hope for the best. That's how I did it. Going to Australia should be safe. Travelling to and within China is the most dangerous. I had to sign a tag saying that the airlines and airport are not responsible for any damages, even with the fragile sticker on - which really defeats the purpose of having any fragile stickers in the first place...

i hand-carried my elec gtr from the phils at Tiger Airways and i was allowed to...
just ask the airline company if they would allow you to hand-carry your stuff and just be charming. hehe...

:p

thanks for the quick response guys. :)
The bass did come with come with an ESP hardcase.
i'm just worried that the worse thing might happen they crack open the hardcase to check of the content :(

did any one tried the courier services?
i'm still open for suggestions :)

Im actually going back home for my Summer vacations tomorrow. Im bring my guitar and amp with me. Im gonna put my guitar in my gigbag (padded) and bring into the cabin and hand it over to the crew to stow it somewhere. Theres like a cabinet for irregular sized cabin baggage.

At the end of the flight i'll be handed my guitar. At least thats what i did on my forward journey. Im flying by KLM.

i noe bro... i used to work at the luggage 'dumping' area :p

challenge who can 'reach' the furthest!

You guys scare me!!! By the way, I was travelling domestic airlines in China the other day. My luggage came out last after everybody got theirs. I almost thought my luggage was put on the wrong flight. And it was slimed with something sticky. It didn't smell. Didn't try to taste it. But I wiped it, cleaned it, and one week later, ants are still crawling into it. I don't know what it is. Contemplating on throwing it away... Don't know what got onto it....

For travelling, you can buy the SKB bass-vault (bass-safe). You slip your bass in your slim sling bag and then slip the sling bag into the SKB. I bought a Yale travel-lock to loop lock the handles.

You can lug around like a luggage, and then when near venue (such as in hotel) take out the sling bag with the axe within so that it's much comfortable.

any pictures of the masterpiece ;)? and also where did you buy it from? Did you hand-carry that thing onboard with you or check it in as a baggage?

http://www.finecases.com/about/airline-travel.html, found this while i was searching for the rules and regulations.
