Since im gonna do my own Fender Custom, so i need some help and advise on the Pickup configuration!

I knw dat Malmsteen uses HS3 and YJM.
Just to confirm, He puts 2 YJM ( mid and neck ) and a HS3 at the Bridge.
Correct?

Could someone correct me if im wrong and also advise me pls if u hv any suggestions or comments before i decide to buy and install them?

I wanna thick crunchy Dist and a nice warm lead tone, and also since tis is gonna be different from all the other guitar i hv, its gonna be all single coils. im new to them as well, so i'd like to have all the input i can get from the experienced!

Thanx alot for the help, advise, comments and suggestions!
Cheers! 8)

I wanna thick crunchy Dist and a nice warm lead tone

dont we all 8O

its gonna be all single coils

Malmsteen uses Humbucker

HS3Wiring: Standard 4-conductor

Magnet: Alnico 5

Output: 93mV

DC Resistance: 23.72K

Year of introduction: 1980

Patent #: 4,442,749

YJM
Works well in all 3 positions for slightly warmer than usual Strat® sound. The vintage 50's magnet stagger is a subtle change from the standard HS-3™. It alters the overall tonal balance so there's a little more clarity and string definition, and highs cut through, particularly higher up the neck. Most recently, Yngwie has been using the YJM™ in the middle and neck position, with the HS-3™ in the bridge position.

Specifications:

Wiring Standard four conductor
Magnet Alnico 5
Output 93mV
DC Resistance 23.50K
Year of introduction 1995
Patent # 4,442,749

well, HS3 and YJM are stacked single coil pups.

if u are looking for single coil tones u shouldnt get stacked ones

GET THE SET OF FENDER HOT NOISELESS PUPS

Jeff Beck uses em, I had a set on my Bonnit Raitt b4 I sold it...

It kicks ASS...

For added tone dimensions - put in a fender TBX and Eric Clapton gain boost ....

please take note.. YJM and HS-3 is a fairly low output pickup.. u have to be a really hard picker to make them pickups shine man.. cheers \m/

+1 to what dhalif said.

it may have a high DC Resis. but the output is quite low.

but if u are looking for authentic single coil tones, go with true single coils man. the twang and glassiness is a pretty nice alternative from humbucker tones.

you can get good crunch lead tones out from them and clear twang for clean because of their low ouput if thats what you want. Am using HS2 in the neck, seymour duncan classic stack plus in the middle and HS3 in the bridge. Got both chunky rhythm and lead tones as well as bell like chimes when playing clean in the 2nd, 4th positions..

Low output pickups forces you to tighten up your technique as it has more transparency in your playing.

Seymour Duncan's SSL 4 Quarter Pounds for strat sound like what you might be looking for.. very high output, in fact almost double that of a normal single coil.. the sound's nice and full too..

just in case ur wondering, ritchie blackmore from deep purple and rainbow used the SSL 4 in both his neck and bridge position.. so yeah that's roughly a good idea of what it sounds like

Dimarzio Pro Track for all 3 positions. Trust me. And remember to split them Tom Anderson style for endless tone options!!

Hey peeps, sprry for the late reply, was in camp!

Well datz a tone load of info, still gotta read it over and over again to decide wat i really want! ! but its very useful! Thanks alot guys! im a total nooob to sigle coils!

one very overlooked pup is the Duncan CoolRails. all the stats are on the duncan website, so i wont list them here. very versatile set when used with hotrails in the bridge. kinda like HR/PASTK/CR. but those are quite high output single coils. thats what i recomend if u want single coiled 'hhumbuckers'

for a true single coil setup, my personal fav is the Duncan Quater pound or custom single coil bridge with the APS-1 or 2 midddle and SSL-1 or 2 neck. provides great tones for blues to hard rock.
