Starting out big

New to Guitar, was thinking of going straight to a Gibson custom shop model. They say that if you get one of those, you'll have more motivation to practice and you'll keep that guitar. What do you guys think?

Hmm.. think u should spend more on the amp. A normal guitar's pretty good enough. U don't want to wreck your guitar when you're just starting out and don't know how to hold it properly or secure the straps.

When u get better u can get a nicer one and you can keep it from getting scratched or damaged or dropped from the experience u've got.

Yes, I think I'll have more motivation to practice if I had a better guitar. Think about the tones you can get.
If you got the money and don't mind spending them, why not? :)

EDIT: Provided you don't have a shitty amp though. Cheers.

yeah, i think you should invest more in a better amp.
usually you'd be bound to buy a new guitar in time to come.
but getting a good amp can last you forever.

yep,get a really good amp.
even how good your guitar or expensive it is,if it runs thru a shit amp.
it will sound like a guitar 1/2 of its price.

Yeah I was looking both at a Guitar and the amp at one go. I like pretty heavy music so i was thinking along the lines of a Mesa boogie rectifier? Single looks convenient but the dual and triple rects look nasty ! or what about the TSL 100? JCM 2000

depends on wat you wan. i would recommend u to actually research on the items beforehand to get a little feel of what u buying. jumping straight to a gibson is really good if u have the money but i must say gibson is one of the best, but it actually all comes down to the style of playing. maybe one day u realise that the gibson's tone is not heavy enough or something therefore, research until u get the perfect guitar that you want to buy. peace and good luck in the music world.

Do note that the rectifiers, JCM 2000 and similar amps are high wattage tube amps, and are VERY loud. Therefore it may not be suitable for playing at home and these amps sound best at high volumes, being tube amps.

The Gibson Les Paul is a great guitar, however it is heavy and has a thick neck, both of which might not be too friendly for beginners.

This being said, it's your money and u can spend it as you wish, just do your research and make wise purchases so you won't regret later on.

Cheers /m\

hmm,if you can afford a gibson custom shop, you must be rich
this is a a list i would recommend if you have $$$.this would nearly definitely promote you to practice more

1.Gibson custom/PRS/ESP/Ibanez
2.Peavey 6505+/Marshall jvm with a 2x12 cab(4x12 cab definately to bulky in hdb and too loud)
3.thd Hot Plate power attenuator(trust me you will need one.i tried my les paul through a 50W combo 2x12 and it was very loud even at 2)
4.multi efx like digitech or line 6
:)

If you're paying for it yourself, yes, you'll feel the pain
and would put in your best effort to make the investment
worth it. But still, its not a guarantee!

Squirrel, here's something to consider.

Two Gibson les paul side by side, one 1.6k Studio and a 4K plus Custom shop.
Can you tell which one sounds nicer ? or which one feels better ?

Maybe you can discern or maybe not, I don't wish to assume.
Most of the time, people who are new to guitar don't go straight
for the Custom shop because they aren't "dead-on sure" that a Custom shop LP is the perfect guitar for them.

Furthermore our taste for tone always changes,
there's never a one size fits all. or a one guitar plays all.
So I urge you to try out more guitars and amps first.
Or at least start out "small" instead of big.

Even if you get this one it won't be your last, I know.

Haha yes Mr Seekz of course I'm paying for it myself. Too many people here depend on their mommies and daddies to get them stuff. Anyway I'm eyeing a really nice piece and I've got it on reservation, will post photos once I collect it after it's been authenticated. Prototypes usually have better quality control right?

If you get multi effects won't you have to run that through a serious amount of pre amps and processors to get the desired tone. If not they pretty much just sound digital to me.

like seekz has mentioned

a gibson lespaul studio is one of the most underrated gibsons for its price.

i wouldnt advise a customshop at one go, i rather u get a gibson lespaul standard or a gibson lespaul classic and invest on a great amp.

Do take note that there are badly made standards out there hence makin the lp standard one of the most overpriced gibsons. They also come in 60s neck ( Thinner ) and 50s necks ( Fatter ). the classics come with 60s necks.

As for multiefx, many people dont like them because they find multiefx sterile and yes, like you i do find them digital. Why? Because they will never exhibit the sole characteristic an analog pedal by itself can give you. Sure they can emulate a variety of tones but they will never be able to emulate the 'warmth' and characteristic only an analog pedal can give you.

Eh, think about it this way:
1. Buy an avg guitar.
2. Buy a pedal you need for your tone.
when you got bored about your current equipment, then its time to use the left over money to buy more stuffs related like pedal, new amp, new guitar, pickup and etc to keep your motivations going.
3.Spend soem money on guitar megazine and books. Reading does motivates me somehow.

Why ? can't I just buy the Guitar, amp and other stuff as well?

Sure you can, its your cash.....

What he's trying to say that sometimes, some beginners lose interest after a while and they arent motivated to play anymore because of reasons like "its too hard" or " I dont have enough time to play" or even " I dont like the sound of my guitar anymore and I want a new one" , etc. I have met such people who buy real expensive guitars and after a while just chuck them aside mainly because they loose interest in playing guitar. I really feel thats a real waste of money, so ask yourself, are you really serious in guitar playing? I was asked the same question 4 years ago, though I bought a $250 acoustic instead of a $99 one when I said yes. I personally dont know why you went all in for a les paul custom as you could have tried many other guitars out there which you might find better than your LP custom, but again, your choice.

And remember, Amp>Guitar, so get a good amp, a 30w one for Solid state and a 5-15w for tube. Dont go crazy and get a 100W full stack because those amps arent really practical in Singapore especially if you live in a HDB/Condo.

Motivation can come in diff forms, like it sounds good i want to play more, sometimes u just finds that your not getting it and you feel like giving up so i guess it would be i spend a few thousand on this guitar can't afford to waste my money so no choice just practice die die also practice more

Of cos you can just go ahead and buy the guitar!
You already reserved it anyway.

we're not telling you what to do, its just that you
were asking for our opinions, so we're just trying
to be helpful.

Anyway, looking forward to those pictures!

somebody's got serious GAS!!! LOL

ok jokes aside...i'm assuming u havent really went out and tried all the other models out there in the market. i'm making this assumption as plenty of friends i have only know of gibson when i talk abt guitars. considering u're into heavy stuff, u might wanna consider ibanez and esp instead. gibson isn't really cut out for extremely heavy stuff unless u put mega voltage monsters in them.

then again like someone mentioned b4 me, make sure u can differentiate between 2 diff guitars' tone 1st. if it makes no diff whether u play a gibson lp classic or u play an epiphone special 2, then for ur own sake do not buy that custom shop.

good luck. :)
