Something i encountered in a guitar shop

that one... you no need to give name also ppl will sure know one la! that fella. haha. i hope he or his staff sees this thread, man. sure i may have got a couple of pedals from him, but they weren't the best of purchases really. wat with the (unusual) jacking of prices... i dressed like a cockster that day, tshirt and shorts... basically look like got no money type.. but sadly for that particular shop owner, i did my homework. he tried to ketok me but to no avail.. :D

Are you serious? You get such treatment? Its a disgrace that such things ever happen.

If I were you, I'd put the money on the table and tell them to show me the goods. Tell them to pack it up, ring out the bill, then walk out the store. Then you say, " You're right, the colour didn't sound good "

Customers really shouldn't be treated that way, its our right to get whatever colour we want. If I could I'd want to own every single colour strat ever made.

Such sales assistant really tarnish the shop's image. I wouldn't ever patronise such a shop.

yep, I was quite peeved. But I do not blame her (oops) 'cos I think they sometimes forget that they're working as a assistants and take on a guitarist's mindset.

But as a retail assistant or front line sales, it is important to know the rights of the customer.

If the customer asks for a particular item, why mock the customer?
What are they trying to prove to the customer? Its very disrespectful, the customer isn't even asking for anything out of the ordinary.

And the origins of their guitars are pretty dodgy too. I shan't go into detail though.

Please. Go into detail. If it's truely dodgy, we and the law have a right to know. If it's not dodgy, then it's slander.

Elaborate your position, please.

I'm afraid what I have is purely anecdotal, and I cannot guarantee 100% accuracy. Although I assure you that the law has been involved, according to my source. I'm afraid this is all I can tell you since I cannot personally claim any of this is true.

If this were true, and guilt was confirmed, wouldn't the said shop have already have had it's license revoked? And the owner convicted/punished? The mere fact that the law has done nothing about it would already tell you the level of guilt, or lack of, in this case.

I have a feeling I know what you're referring to, and if so, I would think that I have also a clearer picture of what actually happened, and despite whatever market rumours exist, the truth is rather different, and less juicy.

I urge you not to perpetuate that which you are not entirely clear of, and not to react based on hearsay.

I agree totally with you, which is why I refuse to retell the tale. I just felt that in light of this thread, I should bring up a customer's responsibility to be cautious and not take everything on face value.
I apologise if it has caused any unnecessary distress or if anyone found it slanderous. I assure you that it was not my intention.

Oh yea. That reminds me of this incident at a certain shop at peninsula shopping centre, just outside that little slope thingy outside davis. The dodgier looking one.
I asked to try a JEM they had lying around, and the shopkeeper basically told us we can't afford it and to get out. We were literally looking at each other going "Wtf?". He went on to tell the assistant that we were a bunch of punks messing around, as if he takes any care of the instruments in his shop (they're all cramped together).

Anyway, my friend went on to buy a Fender strat worth roughly two times the price of the JEM.

I beseech you guys to not patronize that store. And the origins of their guitars are pretty dodgy too. I shan't go into detail though.

that's suck... seriously the owner must have several brain damage.... :???:

want to tell story just tell and get straight to the point yeah...

And stop discussing legal issues too...we are in a guitar gear discussion thread!

Actually, I went to that shop just the other day. Was looking at the fenders and just touched one of them. The keeper snapped at me saying "get your hands off the guitar".

And I basically asked him what the prices were, and he said in a rather condescending and snappy manner "'60s fender strat ... eight thousand five."

I was wearing a shirt and a burberry pants, so i guess i wasnt dressed like a punk. But still got a similar treatment. Haha...

hmm i am actually a regular customer at 'that' shop, however, i have never encountered these kind of treatment before, and frankly he is quite nice as well..maybe you guys went to the shop on the 'wrong' day..

I dunno which shop you guys are talking about but all the guitar shops I went to at Peninsula, they give pretty 'decent' customer service. They usually only attend to me if I ask, otherwise they will ask if I need help and leave me alone (I prefer the latter, but I don't like being followed, I feel uncomfortable). There used to be this salesman at Swee Lee that usually ask if I need help, then I declined politely but he kept shadowing me and I felt really uneasy.

Music Theme usually ask if I need help when I'm at the counter, other than that, they leave me alone. Same for Davis and Yamaha.

Swee Lee's sales assistants don't usually ask if I need help or anything unless I approach them first cause they're usually busy. Same for Yamaha.

Guitar Connection usually ask if I need help then leave me alone after I declined.

77 Guitar usually say "Hi" to me then let me browse the shop or they don't give me any attention cause they're busy talking among themselves. Their conversations are damn funny if you stay and overhear. "Mas Selamat limping still can swim!", "I heard he's selling Ramlee Burger in Malaysia to survive" and other funny stuff.

There's one shop that sells Sadowsky Guitars, usually ask if I need help if I approach them.

Maestro usually say "Hi" and "Welcome", then shadow me for 2 minutes and ask if I need help before leaving me alone to browse.

There're some shops I haven't been to yet.

Overall, it's pretty cool. When I was at Guitar Centre in the US, they usually greet and bid you farewell and help when you ask them. Otherwise they'll leave you alone. I prefer being left alone when it comes to instruments. But when I buy shoes then it's a different story...that topic aside though.

Being professional helps a lot, but sometimes people do make stupid mistakes. Like asking the customer a stupid question or giving stupid comments. But customers also make a fool of themselves, sometimes you seen young teenagers going to Swee Lee and making noise like some party or riot going on, loud and strumming on the guitar like crazy. Sheesh...
