Soldering 1/4" plug to Sony headphone wire...

This is a longshot, but I am trying to make a custom cable from an old pair of Sony headphones and end up with a 1/8" to 1/4" wire.

It has a 1/8" stereo plug at one end and at the other, I want to put a 1/4" head, like a Neurik head, that I will plug into an amp.

I stripped the insulation and it reveals three coloured filaments - red green and gold. Does anyone know where I solder these in the 1/4" plug? ..bear in mind that I don't care that it's mono output...

Thanks for any help anyone can give.

you could've just bought the coverter at SLS...

Don't forget this was a pair of *headphones* so I snipped off the earpieces with some scissors to make a little cable - just for fun; there was never a jack on one end - of course I know I could have bought one for next to nothing. :)

Do you have the original 1/8 connector?

If you have then strip off some insulation.
Scrap off the enamel coating on the coloured wires.
Use a multimeter to check the continuity from the wire end to the 1/8 connector. You can then determine which colour goes where.

Good luck in soldering these tiny coated wires. It'll take some patience to remove the coatings and properly solder to the new connectors. Doable but not really a novice solderer's(sic) project.

Have fun. 8)

p/s: I've reread your post again and understand that you're trying to make a cable out of the wire. Same worksteps as above. Now you definitely HAVE the 1/8 connector.

Just check the continuity and then solder the Ring and Tip wires together to convert the stereo to mono. Maintain the Sleeve as ground.
