Snare Drum Talk

bliss> im looking for all maple dw snares but im open to others as well, cos i've never tried a dw before. I'm curious to find out the quality given its strong reputation. I understand you have the Neil Peart snare, its a beauty. Where did you get it from?

Kari > oh i've tried O rings too, but i feel that they dampen the snare too much. I wld use them or moon gel for recording purposes but not for live gigs.

Bum, i dun have all-maple but I've got another spare Natural DW Edge if u interested and also a DW Craviotto which is now called DW solid shell since Johnny has parted ways and set-up his own Craviotto Drums. One of the finest drums those solid shells are.

DW used to sell Johnny's drums, I don't know why they stopped but Johnny's own company sells his drums now.
"By the mid 1980’s, Johnny had joined with Billy Gibson (Huey Lewis and The News) to form the Select/Solid Snare Drum Company. Even though his first effort in the drum business lasted only a few years, the drums he created under the Select/Solid brand became highly collectible. In 1990 Johnny formed his own company, Craviotto Percussion, and two years later he was introduced to Don Lombardi (founder and president of Drum Workshop, Inc.) by close-friend and legendary studio drummer, Jim Keltner. For more than a decade, the availability of custom-quality DW snare drums made from Craviotto solid Maple and exotic wood shells further expanded Johnny’s reputation as a master drum builder and the reigning authority on the subject of solid-shell drum design."
(Taken from Johnny Craviotto's website)

Johnny Craviotto collaborated with DW to build his single-ply steambent snares.

It was his hook-up with DW in the 1990s that really helped make Johnny’s
name though. Now, he makes them available through his own brand - Craviotto Drum Company.

Johnny Craviotto has been making snares for a looong time, it's just the transition from making them under the DW brand, to making them under his own brand now.

Get one lah, Marc. A 6.5x14" Limited Edition Black Cherry Craviotto costs only about S$1800

bliss > wow! 8O i wld love to try the dw edge and the solid shells. Bear with my ignorance, but what type of wood are the solid shells made of? Is the dw edge the one with maple plies and brass? You must be a real die hard dw fan with such a fine collection. :D

kari > nope i haven tried using double ply heads yet, but ill keep that suggestion in mind. Im still using the stock G1 coated heads till they are over stretched. save some $$ la

bliss > can post or PM pics of your dw edge? Will you be bringing your snares down for the drum meetup in March? :D

btw ill post some pics of my Starclassic Performer soon.

Bum, i try to find it. Tink its sumwhere in my com. As for the meetup, im still not confirm if im coming down. Let u noe soon..

Hi folks, here's some pics of my snare. Its a Tama Starclassic Performer in Birch / Bubinga. It has a White Silk finish, which reminds me of the vintage buddy rich snares.

Its really loud and resonant, and I love the warm sounds. It can rather versatile too, I've tried tuning it up and the sound produced can be deceiving for its 6.5" depth.
