Snare Drum Talk

I was one of the last few at the SL sale on sunday evening and I saw the Omar Hakim Sanre selling for 285 after discount. Damn good deal. Was bloody tempted to get it man.,,quite chio. Its shell is the lighter brown and not the darker brown.

Then i saw the Pearl refernce snare..13 X6.5...6 plys of birch and 14 pls of maple...i was like shit mannnnzzzzzzzzz......after discount, it was 500 flat...good deal but i didnt get it. Now i regret...

new pork pie!

Hey guys, I just got a new Pork Pie 13x7 little squealer snare off eBay. It's the one with 31 vents, black satin oil finish. Black lugs and upgraded die-cast chrome rims.

What can I say, it's a beauty! I've used it for a couple of gigs already and it's one LOUD mother. You can really hear the tone of the wood coming through, especially when miked.

Pictures will be up soon as I can take them. Check back soon!

RLA, wow... didn't know they stocked on the omar hakim snare... coz they did dissapoint many customer who enquired about it...

if it was a lighter brown shell, most prolly it's still new lah.. coz the wood haven't aged.. "i guess".. coz all omar hakim same mah, 6 ply 2.2mm african mahogany... hehe

RLA, did u saw any vinnie paul's yesterday? i wanted to get that one but damn it was gone when i came... around sat afternoon..

and yea the reference snare is 500 flat after discount lah... but they are weird u know... they sell the reference snare the red colour one, than the red colour pearl reference drum kit they selling for 17k that one put sensitone snare.. wth?

i bought my omar hakim around 275 only.. not 285... i guess some other guy bought it already.. haha

what u got rla??

ELEVENINE: how many plies sia ur pork pie?? so many vents, super duper loud sia.!

Yeah i saw the reference snare at SL too, it was recommended by the salesguy there. According to him, Tama Goh ordered one already. Its quite a good deal I think - $500 after discount. Its a real heavy snare, and when you turn it around you get an initial shock from the 20 plies staring right at your face. Too bad it wasnt tuned, so I couldnt get to hear how it sounds. Its odd that they dont sell the reference snare together with the reference drum kit, I mean if you are gonna fork out $17k you should at least get your money's worth right?

Btw I use a 14x6" Tama Starclassic Performer Birch/Bubinga. Its very resonant, in fact when i do recordings, the sound engineers tend to complain bout the high freq ring. I tried moongel but it dampens the snare too much for my liking. Any tips for reducing the ring? :D

hahah, drum bum, i got the same prob as you, been trying to reduce the highs on our tama birch/bubinga..sounds horrible to sound guys but it sounds nice to me, I like the pail sound. LIke Chad Sexton from 311? His snare sound is awesone. But i still love my Akira the most!

Hey Kari, I didnt see the Vinnie on sunday evening..But i really wonder how the reference snare sounds like. And it a 13x6.5 as well. So it should be interesting. I ended up getting some el negro cowbells to replace my normal pearl ones. I must say that the elnegro cowbells are quite musical and not jarring like the elcheapo ones.

nice... its a new signature cowbell from Pearl rite? what other snare available at SL now? How abt Pearl hardware and replacement parts in SL? like lugs, rods, hoop.. is it still available after the sale?

Yeah, everything still available..but of course no discounts. By the way Kari, is there gonna be a sale at Bentley or ABC music next week? Ill be in KL for abt 7 days and was wondering if there was anything i could check out?

Bentley IS having a CNY sale now. But that so called 'sale' is actually only restrict on limited item. Usually items which hard to sell. Discount? I believe its only up to 35% max. Ah.. u also get angpow which contain discount voucher for your next buy... deng!

When is the bentley sale ending? Are the cymbals on sale? Also, are there any good acts to catch in KL during the next week?

As promised, here are some pics of my snare. Apologies for the quality, they were taken with my trusty Sony w810i phone.

marcdadrummer >> the snare is 8-ply maple.

All in all, it was a good buy from eBay, the drum was listed as used but it really looks brand new!

Oh yeah, and hi kelvin (a.k.a drumbum)! I didn't realise it was you until I saw your sig.

love your kit and of course your Lil' Squiler snare!!! i also dig ur Elliminator stand. How much did u get it?
The kit, its pdp rite? Maple or Birch? Specs pls!

rla: the CNY sale is on until 5th March. the cymbals? im not really sure but i will go and check out next week since its my trimester break. as for the ang pow, u're only entitled to pick one only with purchase of RM1500 on a single receipt.
Acts? There are some local acts performing in KL. International act? Im not really sure.

nice!!! but i think u should post this in "show your kit" thread. btw, nice setup and i love your hi-hat stand! (i wish i cud have it)

rla > wats the size of your tama snare? phew, at least im not the only one having that resonance problem hah I thought my tuning technique was wrong initially esp since im using die cast hoops, which shld reduce the excess ring. But im getting used to the high pitch sound and kinda like it now. My guess is that the bubinga plies causes the extra ring. Birch on its own shldnt pose such a problem.

elevenine > hey shaun! I love your pdp kit and your new pork pie snare dude. But that snare is so bloody loud, how you gonna prac at home? :D I must go try your kit soon, too bad the last hols were so short i had no time to go

Btw is anyone selling their dw snare?

hello after reading some of the guys thread in pg4 or pg5 i cant rmb but then about the remo o'rings. i dont think u can tape or glue them down right. i mean, dont they work by vibrating upwards and filtering the vibrations off?

anyway. i bought my pearl maple picollo finally. paid only $175 at the cny sale in sweelee. just what i need. oh ya what are those orchestric cnares? what do they sound like?

cant rmb what brand but i think its pearl. they were on the rack. on sunday@4pm still got 1 more omar hakim. lol

Nah, no prob tapin them a lil to prevent sudden movement. Those are concert snares and if u look at the wires, they are designed for maximum sensitivity and clarity, can be used for normal playing if control is good bt not recommended for studio work.
