smoking

Why are cigarettes around in the first place? And if the government wants to ban here and there, why don't they just ban the sales of tobacco products in the first place?

BECAUSE the government is earning LOTS from Tobacco Taxes! :?

Besides cannot ban. The government had learnt its mistake (and stupidity) from the chewing gum ban. We became a laughing stock around the world because of that ban.

I wish they would ban import of cigrettes. Yes, you read correctly. I've been smoking 10+ years. Quitting is a bitch! Pls ban! I become smoke free and people get richer, govt poorer! YAY

Wait a minute.
We are and will be laughing stocks. Always.

hmmm...i tink banning it is quite dumb, even though its very easy to do, anw heres a scenario

1) govt bans cigarettes in singapore

den

2) a huge black market emerges

den

3) people who really cannot butt the habit, resort to the black market and spend shit loads of money to continue smoking

den

4) more bankrupcy cases in singapore

den

5) govt not happy got so many bankrupts

den

6) ...

Hmmm... although banning chewing gum came at a price, of a little worldwide mockery. But it's just a superficial wound. I bet some of the govt of other country secretly admire us for the resolve to clear the streets of gum stains.

It's a show that to become more a cultured society, sometime the only way is by enforcement, not propaganda.

But the difference between gum and cigs are very great. Can you tell me of someone who is dependent on chewing gum??? Even if there is, it's like only a few amongst the whole population.

But being a smoker can mean to be dependent on smoking. I believe some more traditional doctors will tell you, if a person has being smoking for 40yrs, his body might react adversely in it's absence, in some remote cases could even be fatal.

Humans are humans, if you give him gums, sure will find gum stains, no matter how civilized. If you give him smoke, sure will find cig butts litter and 2nd hand smoke.

A very sticky issue to tackle.

on a related/unrelated story, anyone ever seen the HK anti-smoking ads?

they show an office where people chew gum and pass on the chewed gum for others to chew.

one of them protests and says "How can you pass what you chewed on to others?"

the girl replies, "How can you pass on second hand smoke then?"

the other ad is similar with the people passing toothpicks in a kopitiam.

i agree they earn alot of tax on ciggs.

But i TOTALLY DISAGREE abt us being the laughing stock...~
i view the the banning of chewing gum by government as a very smart economic move. TV show's like "Ripliey's believe it or not" air us, giving us publicity, attracting tourist ~! This is exposure and boosting our economy ~

back to topic,
totally agree with jeremyrozario ..., banning ciggs ... is impossible. History has taught the United States that the total banning of alcohol resulted in higher corruption, and the government losing lots of taxes to the mafia (ie, bootlegging). Same with ciggs .... in fact alot of cig smuggling now also ... ~

but .. it's kinda good also la ~
if it gets to be too much of a bother to smoke ...
hopefully i'll quit .... (positive attitude) ~

not just traditional doctors,
this "need" to smoke is becoz the body need to remain in a state of homeostasis... this mean ... peace or balance....~ It is the reason why smoker's experience withdrawl, similar to drug addicts...even ppl who drink coffee on a regular basis ~

i think it is a good idea to totally ban smoking....
being a non smoker i have good friends who smoke...and most of them do wanna quit....

Besides.....humans don't need to smoke to survive.....it does more harm than good anyway.....y not be a smoke-free country? :D

they have those tobacco gums now....only available on precription by a doctor to help quit smoking.

smoking in toilets is seriously very * up. always smoke in toilets in my school. i go in...wa the smell, then i have to stop breathing. lol
but whenever i smell smoke, i will have breathing difficulties. my nose will be blocked, and have to breath harder.

spare a thought for everyone, esp people suffering from ASTHMA

1 $10 cig = 1 packet of GHS boomers. (with GST at most 1.00++ more).

2 $10x2 cigs = 1 packet of red devils

3 $10x3 cigs = 1 korg ga30 tuner

4 $10x4 cigs = 1 visual sound adaptor

5 $10x5 cigs = 1 2nd hand 6/10 cosmetic condition ds-1.

and the list goes on and on and on!

Dont smoke!! lets all be healthy rockers. omg im gonna get pwn. lol

In these days, there are rights. There is the "right" for the smoker to smoke and "right" for the non-smoker to have fresh air. Jeremy is right in saying about the black market. In some countries where tobacco tax are hiked very high, a black market develops. However, it is still an effective way to stop community smoking.

I really don't think the tax imposed is an incentive for the government to let people smoke. The reasons cigarettes are not banned are many but definitely not because of tax. If you calculate the medical cost of smoking related diseases + the other intangible cost (such as lost of working days due to smoking related diseases etc), the cost far outweighs the tax and sales from tobacco many times. There is every incentive to STOP people from smoking from that perspective.

Why ban smoking in public places? Because this is what we call evidence-based methods - it has been shown to actually reduce ETS (environment tobacco smoke) thus causing less harm to others. For the benefit of Jeremy, since you are doing a project on it, let me point you to a website: http://www.thecommunityguide.org/. Smoking cessation methods used on a larger scale are in it. It includes methods that work and methods that do not work. THAT's the reason for the ban.

who do you think is going to enforce this ban ???
more than 1/2 the police force are smokers, or eventually become smokers.
so ..... who will they buy from ? will they still catch ppl who smoke ...
corruption up, tax income down...~
i doubt any country will dare to ban smoking totally ...
might as well ban alcohol (like US last time) while ur're at it ~

What about.. Slowly increasing the age limit of tobacco sales? So that the young will not be able to pick it up, legally of course.
