Smoking good for vocal??

haha kena lecture by all the grannies and grandpas here ;) see we care so much about our fellow singers. lolz~

haha yeap..we care for our fellow softies!! haha..and true that u will get a husky voice if you smoke..mines husky already..but im a light smoker now..=D

i smoke light ones too.. damn light, 1mg tar 0.1mg nico, can hardly taste or feel a damn thing when i first tried it.. but i'm so used to it now that when i smoke my usual, i get giddy and breathless :|

to smokers, do you notice any differences when you smoke and sing and when you stop smoking for a while and sing?

it had a major impact on my singing, for starters there was less restriction in breathing, and it was much much much easier to execute diff parts and sustain them... so easy i actually got shocked lol!

hmmm how about letting your vocals mature through time and not let smoking speed up the process? having husky vocals sure it's nice and all but it's very limiting to what you can sing. but if that's the road you wanna take, then make damn sure.

i take certain precautions before a gig, usually it's no cold/gassy drinks, oily food. i quit smoking a long time ago. basically as a quick rule of thumb? i don't eat before a gig. but drinking water is a must must must.

oh, and peh pa koa. it helps. and tea tea tea, preferably ginger.

true..

smoking can help someone to cream because it dries our throat.
if u noticed most screamers have very coarse voice.
i too want to learn to scream thats why i'm a heavy smoker

hmmm okay, just remember that there's more to life than screaming. the damage is permanent. so don't go screaming till your throat bleeds or anything

i second ^
Screaming and heavy smoking just effs the throat more and you'll never realise it until it's too late.. cut down lah..

Scream

I took vocal lesson few years back, i learnt alot on techniques, talking about "Screaming", there's some ways to do it, using headtone or falsetto? U can scream over n over n over if you know the right technique :), some tips for old school 80s rock techniques sang by some singers/bands on critical/chorus/ending parts, I remember you - by skid row (headtone), she's gone - by steelheart (falsetto), Sarrounded -by dream theatre (headtone), Tom Sawyer - by rush (headtone mix falsetto), Highwaystar (headtone/falsetto mix), Carrie- by Europe (Headtone, half falsetto), and thats my ex-band repertoire first set for every gig we had and those are all high pitch songs, i'm a heavy smoker and i managed to sing those straight 1/2 an hr-45 mins in that order without damaging my vocal cord or tired in between the set, thankful that i took up the individual course and my trainer is a lady, shes the only vocal trainer i know and happened that she and her hubby owned a jamming studio that time, to me best to have women trainers coz women pitching is probably higher than we men so we got to throw all the afford and practices to reach thier pitch on certain high notes, but of course u wont be able to reach the same high notes as thiers but thats the moment you practice and apply the right technique to Screammmmmm to reach high notes...so its ok to smoke and be a singer BUT clove ciggies would restrain you from pitching smoothly, i ever screwed up my high nots coz too much of clove ciggies, so i stayed away from clove ciggies if im gonna perform......if ure serious singer and like to scream..learn the right technique b4 you damage your vocal cord permanently....... :)

Smoking helps to boost up for screaming/growl style vocals.
BUT! It really drains your vocal stamina too alot.
My first-hand experience in live performances.
Studio is okay to smoke.
Recording is a big no. Recording takes up lots of energy. Really.
Stick to plain water. :)

I've been smoking gudang garam since 1985 till now and have led a semi professional muso life. In fact i use my voice a fair bit in my day job too...so I can't say it's affected me at all ..if anything it's made my voice huskier compared to my "Dick Lee" kinda voice before I started smoking.

It's a filthy & expensive habit though .... dammm now I feel like going for a puff

Aiyo, I think smoking is not good for vocals lay.
How come you all think its good?

Less lung capacity aint good.
Drier throat aint good as well...

If anything I think its just psychological.

non smokers - don't start. just drink water.
smokers - continue smoking.but not too much. expensive.

one of my recording experiences is that I noticed smoker vocalists perform normal at first if they don't smoke, then after about 30 mins they wanna puff, I'll suggest them share cigarette with their friend first, just 3 puffs + drink abit of water, continue singing. then after that when almost peng san after 1 hour of singing, get them to go for a 2 cigarette one shot smoke break. and suddenly they'll perform like a champ, and unfortunately about 30 mins later again their voice will become gonecase, macam too much keropok.
by then usually enough vocal takes.

Yes i agree with you.
I myself flunk my vocals on a recording.
That time i smoke a stick before entering the studio.
Since then regretted with that song and not gonna hear to it FOREVER!
Really. Sheesh.

hmmm, i smoke, i drink, i sing and play guitar at the same time, i move around alot, i play songs metronome at 170 the least, but i don't get tired. My throat gets really dry though. I sing, not scream, yet i was once a vocalist for a hardcore band which required singing. And i got a lesson for you all; if you want to get nice vocals that can reach any note, be sure never EVER to join a screamo band. I used to hit higher notes until I joined my screamo band(which is defucnt). Now my voice is low and husky, heh heh, just like Elvis Presly.

I used to ...

Smoke
Drink
Assorted stuff ;)

Kick those habits already.
Yes it does affect your voice if you're singing to a certain extent. I think its more of a lack of breath issue unless singing through your throat is your thing.
best way to find out is to kick the habit to tell the difference for yourself.

:D

It's definitely not a good habit to be smoking and singing.
Coming from a smoker here who's trying to quit :P

There's a common belief that smoking helps rock/metal vocals but if you do up a google, you'll realise that even rock/metal vocal coaches suggest against it.

smoking is bad. for health and for voice. since lung capacity is reduced. smoker vox tends to run out of breath sooner.and it spoils the singing directly.and in a major way.and also spoils the mood of other jammers.if they aren't smokers. i cant stand cigers' smell.it stinks lyk shit.

Smokling

Goodness, how can smoking be good for ANYTHING AT ALL. Isn't it obvious. Doesn't sound logical the minute I first saw this thread. Can't resist not replying.

Nonetheless, even if it IS good, it'll still silly to take it up. Shortening your lifespan to sing better? Think again dude.

smoking makes your voice huskier and sexier. and excellent for all that screamo music lately.

i don't smoke. therefore my voice is smooth, I only got that natural sexy husky voice when i'm sick but I'm rarely sick too cos of my decent health and my wallet is pretty fat from all the savings of buying cigarettes.

you want husky/screamo vocals? down half a small (will do) bottle of tabasco and a teaspoonful of wasabe (extremely spicy flavour, not the greentea ice cream) at the same time. the kick will be so hard your eyes turn red + emo and your brain gets this 13 ampere electric shock heh

christ on a bike, this is the dumbest question i've seen on this board, yet. amongst a whole load of very very dumb questions. give the guy an award.

have you heard keith richards "sing"? that's the singing voice of a smoker. congratulations.
