singapore music blog "coffee & cigarettes"

Hi All
I think ellen should thank me for making her blog more known.

Seriously though, I thought I had to be harsh because anyting less may have meant that what I wrote may have fallen on deaf ears or turn into an ear-in ear-out episode.

When I went to advertised blog, it was the wrong URL. On the top left of the page was a link to some bootleg media. The disclaimer was short and actually worded in such a way that it worked against her MP3 contributors. And this person chose to remain a virtual unknown.

I saw too many wrongs in such a short time. I felt that I had to say something so that hopefully ellen would make the necessary changes to the site.

My conscsience is clear in as far as helping the local music scene. Ellen seemed like a youngish sort of person with good intentions but IMHO, she wasn't doing it right and I felt it was at the expense of fellow musicians.

And as blueprintstudios mentioned, it is not a local blog site as there is ample coverage on foreign artistes. Again, I thought this was untrue, based on her posting here that it was a blog for local music. Good intentions alone do not always lead to good outcomes. Good intentions need to be cultivated with good practices and a fair amount of knowledge before it bears bountiful fruit.

I am hopeful that ellen took my subsequent comments in good spirit and that she does do something to the site so that it fulfils her initial intent without contravening any IP rights which would be to her detriment and that of her contributors.

Cheers
RoRK

hi blueprintstudios, thanks for ur kind intentions.. actually i also see where rork is coming from. let me just clarify something: this blog started from a personal desire to write abt the music i like and to share the songs involved, so basically while this is a local music blog (i.e. cos i'm writing from singapore), its content is not limited to just local acts, but music that i personally like and would like to recommend.

i've long been of fan of mp3 blogs like I am Fuel, You Are Friends (http://fuelfriends.blogspot.com) and I Guess I'm Floating (http://iguessimfloating.blogspot.com) and believe me, these guys have daily readerships of thousands and they do not have "legal permission" behind every song they post. they post mp3s of songs they like, with or without the permission of the artiste involved. i guess this might strike u as a very dangerous thing to do, but this leads us to see how music distribution has certainly evolved. most record labels and certainnly most artistes would love to get such free publicity, esp from such popular blogs like I Guess I'm Floating.

i hope u guys understand what an mp3/music blog is. there're thousands and thousands of mp3 blogs on the internet these days and so far, unless u leak really, really confidential or exclusive tracks, no one has gotten sued. i know that the IP infringement issue is a sticky one, but my ultimate aim is to ask my readers to go out and buy the cds or the tracks from online stores if they like the music.

oh believe me, some companies, no matter what your good intentions are, do not want free publicity. they rather pay for it. (from an experience filming gigs & post online like baybeats @ esplanade to promote, but received a warning email from esplanade saying they got a right to sue etc)

you can definitely continue what you're doing at your own risk, just like how the other blogs you mentioned are at risk of any lawsuits. and we can only tell you "don't say I didn't warn you" hehe. some ppl have to learn the hard way.

a few things i wanna emphasize before I end this post :
"unless u leak really, really confidential or exclusive tracks, no one has gotten sued" - 1) there's a thing called IP tracking. even the police > blog site > get your login > and hunt you down from there on. (you haven't read the papers about this idiot posting bomb threats using mooched internet?)

2) someone has gotten sued, but probably had too much trauma to even touch the internet anymore to tell the story. at least pay attention to the newspaper statistics.

cheers
