Sg slapped over Freedom of Speech

in my opinion ...
as said in most of the previous threads ...

Racism is not as prevalent in Singapore as in other countries.
Prejudice & Stereotype, on the other hand, are ~!
there is a distinction.

I agree with hifi_killer totally.

Also must beware of who you criticise... Not just political figures...

When TT Durai was still with NKF, he managed to sued 2 guys even though they were telling the truth...

Could be a conspiracy... Keep the theories to yourself, cos we still aren't safe in cyberspace.

I think that the education system is somewhat flawed, where heavy emphasis is placed on academic success instead of intangible values such as morality, ability to think, etc.

the education is the best you can get seriously. In Singapore our education system is pretty much shaped by our constraints, the economy determines our education, the education system is basically responding the demand from the market, if the market desires academic success.. then so be it.

But , nowadays you can clearly see singapore is moving away from academic success or paper qualifications. o levels will be a thing of the past pretty soon, as the through train programme develops further. Local University admission requirements have a significant % of spaces reserve for those with talents in other fields other than academic. Of course this all arises because companies are no longer placeing so much emphasis on hiring people base on academic excellence[/b]

To be racist, one does not have to do anything, but simply has to be prejudiced and discriminatory. I dont have to insult, assault, or stare mockingly to qualify as a racist person. It all depends on us, to do the right thing. Listen to Russell Peters!!!

Oh yeah, as someone posted earlier, if we lighten up, things would be much better, and we can laugh at each other's racial traits without it being an issue of racism, rather just harmless jokes. Only if we're just honest about things at the same time. No use if we think some person talks funny, act normal in front of him/her, and then laugh about it with someone later on when hes absent.

Racism isnt less prevalent here, its racist ACTS that gets people thrown in jail like that *snaps fingers* thats creating this scenario of peace we have here. People here ARE racist. Took the bus once, a bunch of chinese teenage boys (8 of them), got up, all rowdy and crap, nvm. A bunch of males and females (unstated race) got up the same bus, and i heard several indirect insults from these ass**les. I was so pissed, that they chose to take this slimy route of coughing insults at these people, who did nothing to them, sideways. Worse than roaches.

Agree with 3notesbar.!

Racisim is definately prominent here and at a highrate ! Only thing is that pple dun really create "Racists acts".

It is almost everywhere i go..... i can see it feel it hear it !

Its damn ugly, esp when x race can smile at y race and talk friendly, but the moment y race is away, x race will start all the ugly criticism n stuff about y race. Ugly aint`t it? Sad but true..

..

hmm.. i'd like to pick up on the education system being flawed, what are the better ways to improve the system?

then when finger pointing: whose fault is it? the govt or the kiasu parents?

Pass me the broom again

Sure those 3 blogs nearly jeopardised the delicate balance we have amongst the races here. By putting them in jail, it again reinforces what we are all about. We dont deal with the problem at all if we were to just sweep it under the carpet. It sends out a message to all of us that if we were to ever say something like that, we will be jailed. Does that convince anyone who is racist to sudddenly think otherwise? Its again suppression that we are so hugely used to.

History has already made its point. Suppression leads to rebellion. But our Gahmen is smart to know that we will never have the guts to publicly say no...all right all right some of us do. Majority of the population just wants to bet on toto and forget about reality.

To find out whether we really love our country, I ask myself, do I really want my future kids to have his childhood here, when we are all to used to hearing the word NO and so ever in turn regurgitate it out to others. And the freaking rat race, I seriously detest having to camp overnight for a place in a school. What happened?

Singapore is no doubt safe, metropolitan and a food paradise. And most of us still feel unhappy, stressed out, not understood, misunderstood and of course repressed/surpressed/oppressed and if we fall back a bit in the rat race we dont mark up to society.

The Gahmen knows that we are smart enough and well travelled to know what is life. They cant deny that fact that one day, we might again not want to stay here anymore.

One great way to improve the education system! You ready for this???

Introduce guitar/bass/drum education to PAP kindergarden and also primary schools! It makes kids smarter! Well, it helps to improve their learning abilities, so yeah...

LOL wish I'd had that man.
on free speech. hm. it really depends. I think in Singapore about the worst they have now is that you are not allowed to criticise the government openly--at ALL. I feel that it's possible to criticise the government and still support it; simply because you criticise policies, their implementation or certain aspects of the government, it does not mean you don't support the government at the end of the day, OR that you support the Opposition. (honestly. if the govt is bad, the opposition is ten times worse.) free speech is present but not to the extent that it can actually be effective in either a positive or negative way.

freedom of speech has different bases. it depends on how the individual approaches the word in terms of politics. itz never just abt being racist/racist acts/racist shit. thtz merely just a fraction of what freedom of speech actually means in the governing encyclopaedia. glad tht most of u who replied get the message. bt then again, singapore is one of the safest countries at this time. uptight it is, bt over-protected yeahh. mayb u can go catch some havoc in brussells then fly back here n enjoy the safety

..

i disagree with that.

anybody can openly discuss about govt policies, pros and cons etc etc. and no one will get arrested. as long as they're done in the proper channels and everyone else gets a right of reply.

actually come to think of it, you do have the freedom of speech. You are free to express you view.
Whether your view gets heard, whether you kana consequences , well thats another question...

really? that's not what I dug up when I went to do my project on free speech in Singapore...the people I interviewed said differently and so did the research I did. goodness. the government is terrorizing young Singaporeans to prevent rebellion.

okay rephrase. "The government is feeding young Singaporeans weird messages to prevent potential future dissent."
