i'm from a military band which is so slack that they consider it a concert band now and i play the trumpet.. but i secretly learn drums and snare drumming =D and i was very inspired to master my rudiments after watching drumline....then after that i watched it more than 15 times.. (people tell me..get a life...) it's true... hahaha which sucker actually watches a movie more than 10 times?? that's so sick.. well i din care...at least i can play all the cadences featured in drumline =D

ha...

well we share smth in coomon than!

Was from band in sec sch...still is now in SP!woot...

play flute..but secretly sneaked behind to percussion section since sec3 to learn stuff...we always get caught and punished dont we?

but heck it pays off...haha...luv drumming...and flute...

flautist drummer...go figure on the nick

haha!! cool.. trumpet drummer.. TRUMMER!! wat the hell..

the band rules sucks right...like..those from other sections lets say trumpets..those from trumpets not allowed to touch other section's instrument...if touch..then kena pump 100 or 50 or 20 or watever..stupid man..

Then that makes me a Trummer too hahahaa!
Ex-trombone player turned drummer here heh.

Yeah those rules are kinda silly, but I guess they are there to prevent students from spoiling the instruments or something lah. Anyhow, I went around that rule back in my Sec School days. Managed to switch and join the percussion section after a few months of trombone muahahaha!

For those who were in band, don't you hate how the percussion section was sort of treated like a dumping site for talentless players who failed at other instruments? Or those who had bad teeth?

hmmm maybe in your perspective it's a dumping ground..

but for me i feel that these pple who still have the heart to serve for band should at least be part of percussion. rather than quitting just because they have bad teeth..

as for those "talentless pple" it's not true man. for my school, my conductor will run a few tests..
one of it is that he grabs a snare drum, then he taps on it for 4 beats or maybe 8 beats..and he does it super super slowly. like maybe 30-40 bpm.
then after 4 beats or 8 beats..the new recruit has to play at the exact tempo.. this exercise is to test them if they have the potential for memorising tempos at EXTREMELY slow speeds. normally he runs these tests first. so in a way...the BEST will get into percussion section. =)

Yeah that's one way to do it... but most of the time... from what I observed... most of the time, the percussion section is just overloaded with too many members, mostly people who failed at other instruments.

Since you said that there's a "test" before they can qualify into being part of the section, then what happens to those who have bad teeth AND suck at percussion? They should obviously get fired, right? Not to sound mean or anything but there really are some people who cannot make it lah. That's not a sin or anything bad, but it's bad when those people THINK they have the talent, when they obviously do not.

I've had a bad experience with that, and it's made me very sceptical about people now... at first I never believed that all those Americal Idol/Singapore Idol auditions with those delusional kids were true (I thought they were usually staged to give extra humour to the show), but now... I really do think that there are such people... people who can't do something for nuts, yet behave they can. These people are worst of all...

ahhh u can't blame them for loving music though huh.. well.. it's not a curse to be tone deaf or lack the natural tempo within yourself.. cuz u CAN learn and develop these skills..cuz your brain just lacks in it..

but as for those who THINK THEY ARE SO BLOODY GOOD but hell they suck..ahh those guys...get a life..seriously... learn to be more modest and improve before u get on stage to embarrass yourself and make a fool out of yourself and the tv media.

My school band was like what Funkifized described too. The percussion section was like the dumping ground. But heck, I made sure I got dumped there lol. I think it's the perception of some conductors. They see the brass and woodwind instruments as more important than percussion

whoa...suddenly turned into "(fill in the space)rummer" thread!

the thing is...

we all luv other instruments...well...almost every1 noes or wants to learn a second instrument...haha...hopefully that NO PLAYING IN OTHER SECTION rule is burnt...

they shud b lyk SAFband...if you can play a second instrument, ur pay would be higher!WOOO!

Some individuals really have psychomotor problems, and thus experience trouble with their coordination. So as such, an effort to 'cultivate' the skill will prove very challenging indeed. However, who are we to set limits to someone else's potential right? =)

Anyway, although I've never joined the sch band, I can say w/o a doubt tt the dark side of a prideful ego was strong in the percussion section... haha.

P.S: Catch Nate Morton frm the ROCKSTAR:INXS houseband! He rocks!

okie that a first i've heard tha tin the SAF band u play a second instrument u get paid more! hahahaha, well u know i honestly feel i'm one of those talentless people. i feel sort of like a fake, and i'm afraid to be found out heheh. i think this is a mental condition although i can't remember wat its called.
u know maybe thats the case that people that can't do shit become drummers...okie i know i'm gonna get alot of shit for this hahah.but hey u got to go where ur heart takes u right?

I guess i'm a Prummer then~! Played the piano when i was younger... now i can hardly play anything. haha! Interesting hybrids

sounds like plumber... hhaha~ and that's sexy!
