Semi-hollow sound?

Hi, I was wondering how semi-hollow sounds like? Anyone playing one can recommend? Does it sound more acoustic than solid body electric guitar? And how it compares to normal solid-body sounds?
And please don't tell me to google or to try it out myself, I just want to know the opinions of the people on this board, thanks.

I have one. Plugged in, it sounds BIG and louder as though the EQ expanded. More bass (very noticeable), mids and treble. And tonewise, it's very open sounding, deeper, not as much as a real hollow body but still open enough.

Easier to feedback though. A nice sound to have in your arsenal.

Ooh.. glad to see some replies! What are the nicer ones around? Are the artcore as73 / as83 any good? They are the only ones which shape appeal to me in their series... of course the artcore custom as103 as well.. sweet lookin'! But sweelee hasn't brought in the as103 yet - called just now to ask.
I am a sucker for sweet syrupy cleans, wonder if these budget semi-hollows allow for that.

got a friend who sold ALL his gear to buy this.
he still says its the best decision hes ever made.

there are clips there for you to listen to.
though its not exactly a vintage woody kinda hollowbody tone.
its still pretty damn nice. sounds very... thick.

I have an AS73. It;s my favourite at the moment. Great neck, construction, playability etc. I like the stock bridge pup but not the neck.

Because it doesn't use the better, higher end wood perhaps like the Jap counterparts etc I find the unplugged sound ok only. Even a Gibson SG is acoustically louder or rather stronger.

But plugged , its a different issue. This guitar isn't meant to out-335 the real deal but meant to be a cool intepretation of it.

Of course I'm no semi-hollow guru. I guess its overall quality is on par with the better made Squier guitars of today, shockingly very decent.

Would I be getting better build quality/sound if I saved up for a as103? This one has different pickups I think. I prefer the look of that anyway. How is the weight of the AS73 calibre2001? I'm looking for a light, acoustic-sounding but i can still do some sustain type of guitar. Light coz of my bad left shoulder.

My AS73 isn't that light. I don't know the exact weight but it's noticeably lighter than a heavy Les Paul. Heavier than a Highway Fender Tele. For your shoulder's sake, it's advisable to buy a quality strap to distribute the weight around.

If you really want light, try an all hollow body Artcore, like the ones with a Bigsby-type arm. Their really light, but you might not like the sound. I like semi hollows cause it's a balance.

One hollow body that I came to like was the Epiphone Casino. Great concept and veru light too. It has P90s and the combination of these 2 is killer. Too bad its overpriced and the workmanship is very very poor compared to Artcores.

I suppose that AS103 should have the Super58 pups which are apparently good and uses better quality wood. Best you try out side by side and not really too much on marketing info and hype.

And play as many as possible. There're plenty of lemons.

I have to agree with calibre2001 regarding the Epiphone Casino, even though its has a nice tone, it certainly is way overpriced due to a certain Beatle 8)

I myself own a Hamer Echotone semi hollow ES-335 style guitar. The sounds I get are mellower and is certainly very relaxing to play when in clean tone. In distorted mode, it can handle it well but of coz the tones are not as a thick as a solid body like a les paul, sg etc..

Oh ok.. i tot it would be light being semi-hollow.
Check this out! *lust*

can you elaborate about the downside? you wouldn't want to sell it if it's so good

Not sure about thick but semi hollows have nice crunch with the right pups and amp settings.

I guess it has sort of a less 'definite' sound since its airy and big sounding. Pups play a big role here. Solid bodies just have a more definite and solid sound. More articulate ....

my friend recently bought from sweelee an Epiphone Zephyr Blues Semi Hollow Which Was Retailed At $1280 @ $799 with Epiphone Hard Case..Sounds Great..Not Sure If The Promotion Is Still On..You Might Wanna Check It Out
