self-teach or lessons?

I'm mostly self taught. With occasional lessons with crispy. The reason why i like being self taught because its more interesting to figure out concepts by yourself. Even theory can be self-taught by reading up, which is how i learnt most of my theory.

Having a teacher to me is someone who can help me improve by showing me more stuff or answering my questions, when i've reached a standstill in my playing and i need the boost to get me going again. Some things are rather hard to learn by yourself!

But if you have the time and commitment, i presume it is possible to forgo that process. Stealing licks/lines/runs from other people is a good way to teach yourself! Be it your teacher, friend or stranger you can learn something from everything!

So self taught or lessons, all depends on yourself!

i agree with the standstill part. sometimes the simplest of things are the hardest to master. it just takes alot of time, patience and discipline. so just get off your lazy arse and it will come to you eventually. there are always books and also VIDEOS to help you through

having said that, the hardest things are also the hardest to master. maybe then you may need a BASS MASTER to guide you through

here's my 2 cents:

learn as much as you possibly can on your own, stuff like timing and knowing every note on the fretboard, scales, etc. when you've reach a certain level and feel like can't go any further then get a teacher to teach you some really fancy stuff like slapping and tapping or maybe jazz stuff. then you'll absorb more quickly.

i think it's a waste of time and money to get a teacher to teach you how to work with the metronome. basic stuff can be self taught. coz music lessons are very expensive..

I tend to agree with hayabusa. I've been playing bass for many years just by self teaching and playing by ear. I remembered the first song I've learnt (or some mat rockers call "tangkap chord) was 'Remember Tomorrow' by Iron Maiden. After that I did not look back. Master your basics (timing, chords, correct fingering, chord progression of a song etc) on your own to discover your aptitude then you can proceed to the next stage like slapping and tapping.
