Traditional grip is called that simply because it is a tradition passed down from marching drummers. Matched grip looks wierd because it was evolved from traditional grip and suited for harder playing and modern music, not traditional jazz. Only recently, in the last few decades, drummers like Bill Stewart and Jack DeJohnette played matched grip in a jazz setting.
