scalloped fretboard

advantages.
from what i hear and i felt myself,
its slightly easier to shred.

but these things are personal perference.
one man's medcine is another man's poison.

nah from wat i heard. it doesnt help u shred better. it just helps u do incredible bends and wide vibratos. but seriously, scallop no use one. :D

I agree with tany on this.

well....

"The scalloped fretboard only serves one purpose, which is to get more control of your left hand when it comes to slow notes. Fast notes, when you want to play fast scales, actually become more difficult. Plus, I use quite a high action on my guitars, you know? I don’t like low action. Steve and Joe, I love those guys, they’re great, but I’ve played both of their guitars — and I’ve played Brian May’s guitar; Brian’s another hero of mine — and they all set their strings as low as they can. I’ve always found that if you do that it’s easier to play the guitar, but you lose something in the equation because the string needs to vibrate. If you hear a piano note, there is nothing there to disturb the vibration of the note. There is no fretboard underneath. Now, on a violin or cello you get sustain of the note from how long you want to hold the bow. If you hit a guitar note, you have to have the string high, which makes it more difficult to play, especially if you scalloped the neck as well. Then it becomes very difficult."

Words of Malmsteen himself. Taken from BOSS website. :D

Why so Tany? The frets don't move do they? :P

You mean, due to the extra space beneath the strings, one tends to apply too much pressure, resulting in a bend = out of tune.

Btw, doesn't malmy use like .08s?

Satch's action is like, 1mm @ 12th fret or something, from his old website. Vai's action is moderately high.

i scalloped my strat copy, the 1st electric guitar i ever owned..
wasn't very difficult, just tasking.. n all i used was my window (there's a lil balcony thing on it) n a round file i bought from homefix.
i scalloped the highest 4 frets 1st, n then when i was confident enough i scalloped from fret 12-fret 21. the frets were tarnished a bit (a bit only) n the inlays disappeared, but apart from that i wudnt say i screwed up..
later on i did it on a squier strat i owned..

i like the feel of a scalloped fretboard.. not juz cuz easier to bend n vibrato, but there's just that feel that i like, tho it's not something i cant live without.

btw, thor666 sent a link to a page(more than a yr ago) where they show yout how to do scalloping DIY..that's where i got the 1st knowledge of scalloping from..

here are the pics (apology if some aren't clear).

I recommend getting a Warmoth ordered scalloped neck - U can save the original then.

Ask them fo either 6100 jumbo frets or the non rust Stainless steel frets..

worf it!

Thats bad ass!

But well, no wonder he ALWAYS does that run up the fretboard, ending with a squealing bend on the hi e.

it's looks real deep man... what tools did you use?

i suggest getting a replacement neck and have someone scalloping it for you or just get a scalloped neck and fit it in.

Cuz by the looks of it... i think it's screwed bro... and since its also not reversible... might as well..

unless someone else has another idea... :?
